Thread: Chester Craftsman Lathe Manual
01/12/2011 06:55:35
Hi yes Jason is correct and Grizzley write there own manuals not in chingalees.
Look on there site spot the lathe you have note the number Grizzley use numbers not names and download that is how I obtained a descent manual for my Chester626 mill
, though the manuals as they are American go OTT with elf and safety. Though I suspect that Chester, Warco et all; come out of the same factory in China.
Anyway good luck looks a tidy machine if it has the X,Y DRO and gap bed.
Check out how much usage it has had if poss and also is there any damage to the slide bed. indicating abuse.

Thread: Making darts
26/11/2011 01:57:05

Hi Mark

On the surface they look very simple items to make but the tips are usually these days a high grade steel or titanium and a press fit into the barrel. Making the slots for the flights could be interesting as they obviously must not fall of when you throw the dart at the board.

All in all I would recommend you go to a specialist shop and purchase a balanced set. Please by all means purchase your lathe but if that is all you are intending to make I would advise you approach your local model society and there will be someone local to you with a lathe whom I am sure would be willing to help you. And you never know you may get hooked on another hobby….
I am sure that if you let us know what part of the country you are in (the West Midlands covers a lot of Cities and towns)  someone in this forum will point you in the correct direction.

Well good luck whatever way you decide and if you do make them please post the results

If you are useing standard extruded steel expect to mill it to the tolerance
that you wish. To get a decent finish you will need to anyway

Thread: Any experience of the Warco GH Universal Mill?
17/11/2011 01:43:29
I Would look at the Chester 626 this would give you a higher spec for about the same money, In my experiance nothing Warco supplies is out of the box.
By the blurb it seems limited in a number of ways.

Thread: chineese mills
16/11/2011 04:12:07
Hi Terry
I was refering to one of the combi machines the Warco lathe itself is fine and has done excellent work. It is the mill attachment I was talking about.. At the time I was building the 7.25g Anna DAG Browns creation and some of the casting were to say the least lumpy. Have now sold the beast as was getting far to heavy to lug around.
On saying that even on small components I was makeing no matter how tight I tried to lock the column it would occasionaly drift. To my mind the pillar drill/mill/lathe was a good idea for very light work, giveing a low cost solution without haveing to purchase 2 machines.

Cheers
Bob.

Hi Ian sorry
I meant the horizontal round column I have not used the one attached to the Warco for a number of years now as the mill unit would move on anything substantial I gave up on it and pushed the mill section round out of the way A waste of money.
as far as speed is concerned I have put 3 phase
variable speed onto both my machines. This certainly makes life much easier and a lot quiter.

Hi .001
Thank you for kind remarks, could I give everyone advice from bitter experiance
NEVER NEVER purchase a lathe with a so called milling atachment with a round turret, or any other machine unless you want to do only very light work. these are similar to the Warco WMT500 and look at the Warco, Chester , Grizzle.com et all sites to see what I mean. If you are doing anything substantial it will whiplash no matter how tight the column is. I could not afford a Myford or similar bit of kit so bought a Chester626 mill have to say though it stands about 6'6" from the ground it is a substantial bit of kit and accurate, had a few minor changes to make but on the whole great. Could not say that for the Warco needed lots of mods and adjustment though stated tested before delivery by our specialist team. HA HA.

Anyway food for thought for everyone as we are now lumbered with the oriental machines and only secondhand equipment of any quality but costly is now available

Thread: Milling from a sheet
09/11/2011 05:27:25
Hi lads
Do not think you can get anymore puns out of this one so seriosly
Geoff
I am presuming you have a mill with a bed withT slots so
A bit of scrap ply then put your work on top
use your T clamps and 2 scrap bits of steel clamped down to avoid marking the work
carefuly align the job and only when you are happy that you have the X Y
correct start gently cutting down a few thou at a time. You will end up with
round corners so then go to your vice if it has serated jaws once again use packing to avoid marking job.
On the matter of cutters, I use the Fleabay offers of bulk lot of say 10 new "high quality"
joke cutters for this type of work and keep all my Dormer cutters separate for more precision work.
Hope this is of minor help

If you do not have a manual to show lifting points go to
grizzly.com you will find a manual for your machine there.
Manuals are not in Chingaleese.
Good luck fortunately I have strapping big grandsons
They took a Chester 626 mill into my cellar workshop for me.
