Thread: cutting upholstery foam |
01/08/2020 11:24:32 |
As I understand it the foam ,as used in furniture, gives off cyanide fumes when set alight, would this not apply to hot wire cutting... just remembering Fire brigade videos of home safety. Play safe & spend a few shekels on new cushions. George. |
Thread: Guard rails and stanchions.....how do you make yours |

Good question; am looking to make further models with rails etc. I understand if you have the scale right you can get model ships railings & stanchions from model ships dealers. George. |
Thread: Droop & Rein Information ? |

Can't help with the Droop info but looking at your first pay slip brought back memories of mine; yours looks to be dated 13/9/63 .. Sept 63 ? that's when I first started work after leaving school, Sept '63, my first pay was £3 10s 6d... ( £3- 52-1/2p..todays conversion ), mill office boy & 1st year apprentice wages.. ah, my apprentice days !.. George. |

I have a Bison, Dickson clone fitted to my WM250 for a number of years now, apart from having to machine the boss off the casting & making a new post I have no regrets doing it,works just fine for me. George. |
Thread: Stuart 10V Build Log - Complete Beginner... |

I would have to look at the drawing again to clarify what 'guzinta' & what comes 'outa' where. My grey matter is decidedly slower than it was when I built it. I'm just pleased it still runs great. George. |

I bought some vermiculite blocks from eBay some time ago, & a blanket from CupAlloy's when last at Doncaster show & made myself a small hearth. I'd already made the metal frame some years ago but was using the firebricks from a coal fire which didn't reflect heat too well. What I have now is much better. George. p.s. Look for GTR (right hand) or GTL (left hand) ather than the neutral N that you are using Well I've learnt something today too! A new one on me too! I remember grinding HSS tools with an angle to get rid of the nub on the required offcut, in fact I still have one ground this way in my collection. George. |

Stone the rake off the drill, withdraw regularly to claer swarf, use a collet as Andrew has said and drill dry. regards Martin +1 - check the drill, small ones do have a tendency to be bent, roll them on a piece of glass or surface plate ,if you have one. I've found that with multi packs ( box's of 10 ) there's at least 2 + that are bent plus check the cutting edge/lip quite often the back relief is not ground properly & the drill is trying to cut on the back instead of the front cutting lip. Thread: fitting wedge type qctp to Warco WM240 |
23/07/2020 15:01:47 |
As I understand it; & from other posters, it can be bored out but preferably with a carbide insert / tip tool as these QCTP generally have very hard / case hardened skin. Try a file across a corner / edge if it skips it's hardened. George. |

Is the boss not part of the stud? Tony No the boss is part of the casting. When I did my WM250 I had to remove the anti rotation roll pin from the stud / post via underside of the top slide ( you have to remove the top/compound slide on the WM 250 ) then the stud / post will tap out, then you can machine off the casting boss, then make up a new stud / post to suit your new QCTP. Does your WM240 manual not have a page that shows exploded view of the top slide? George. |

I fitted a Bison QCTP ( Dickson clone ) to my WM 250V-F, I had to machine the boss off as I had similar problem, plus the original post was smaller than the block so I had to make a new post to fit so far it has worked just fine, getting on for about 7 years now. i still have the original 4 way tool post so if I ever need to use it again all I need to do is make a spacer to fit the 4 way post, not difficult to do. Over the weekend.. converted a small grinder to a buffer polisher; had ordered left & right handed pig tails but received both with 10 mm bore so had to drill & tap for 12 mm. Bought 12mm left hand tap & die ( CS ) to suit, not that I'll ever need to tap M12 left hand again that I can foresee. Also made up a pair of new aluminium vice jaws to replace well battered steel jaws on vice.

Thread: Mini Lathe Gib strip question |
16/07/2020 12:47:18 |
As Andrew says i would put a couple more dimples in the gib to mate up with the other two adjustment screws. I find that these gibs tend to be of questionable quality at the best of times from the manufacturers. Chinese QC is one step above a chocolate fire guard to my mind . I had a similar problem with my WM 250V-F, bought back in 2012, I ended up making a new gib strip, from brass as I had no suitable ground flat stock, it's been in since then without any problems.. OEM gib strip as supplied.. nothing but a strip of scrap steel! New brass gib fitted... as can be seen the top slide corner undercut is way to wide.. Another mod added.. top slide gib lock..
