Thread: Next issue late?
06/12/2020 13:19:19

I've just sussed where the missing copies are, they are stuck in a broken down goods wagon parked in a siding somewhere waiting to be fixed. Pressure of work or the pandemic has delayed repair. Best get the team fired up to fix it Nick can have his copy then. There's a lot riding on this.

Much ado about nothing! the missing copy can be sourced and if an extra issue is tagged on I fail to see what the problem is. Surely we are faced with somewhat more significant issues. No one is in danger of losing their jobs on rail infrastructure or rolling stock repair whereas many many ordinary workers will be out of work, during and after the the pandemic passes.

Be careful paying for private copies of previous articles - breach of copyright!

Gavin, I'm sure all the Forum Members would like to extend grateful thanks to you and your colleagues for keeping the rail network operating throughout the Pandemic. Without your combined efforts I'm certain we would have experienced infrastructure failures, breakdowns, cancellations and delays. I'm sure that Forum Members using the rail network hope the momentum is maintained post Pandemic.

As a matter of interest (or not) I am 68 years of age and still work the better part of 6 days every week (and have done so for 49 years) have taken only a week off since January. I run my own business and have managed to operate successfully and remotely throughout and not found it necessary to furlough any staff.

I have just had a quick look at the website and can't see any inducements to subscribe in the form of "never miss an issue" and would be pleased if someone could direct me to this.

Having just gone through the "Subscribe" process and selected the MEW option the terms and conditions appears at the bottom of the screen and again at the "check out securely" page, accessed by a quick click. I would respectfully suggest the terms and conditions are there to be read and again respectfully suggest there is no guarantee to replace the missing issue. The prominence or otherwise of the terms and conditions option is no more obscure than any other site.

Further some of the statements made relating to MTM are borderline calumnious.

Dave exactly! my copy of 298 was a mongrel with missing and duplicated pages, and yes I raised it on the Forum but having raised the issue was prepared to leave it at that. Neil kindly tried to help but I purchased a copy from W H Smith as I have an unbroken set and there the matter rests.

There are two topics running on this issue (pun intended) and I think the subject has been done to death, MTM are not in breach of contract, the extra magazine(s) in lieu satisfies the contractual obligations and it will be possible to obtain the missing copy. Time to pull up stumps, everyone has had their say!

My copy arrived today (299) delivered by the trusty newsagent. Quite happy to receive it and not sure whether late or not. A little patience goes an awful long way. Thank you.

Thread: Delay to Issue 299
30/11/2020 13:52:15

I understand the contractual issues regarding subscriptions and the frustration with delays but one must accept we are experiencing difficult times - and it is my belief we have seen nothing yet with the economic fallout. If however we wish to continue to receive our digital/hardcopy magazines, cancelling subscriptions or refusing to buy will cause the failure of publishers and I would suggest we will all be the poorer for that.

We only have to look at exhibitions where traders are counting the cost of attending only find they are a shop window for the internet, resulting in purchasers examining, kicking and testing before buying elsewhere.

I suggest, with respect a little patience and understanding is required otherwise there may be no magazines or forums for us to enjoy.

Thread: GDPR and DPA breaches
23/11/2020 18:51:54

OP not sure GDPR is an issue and I doubt The Information Commissioners Office will be in the slightest bit bothered about this. The Data Protection Act concerns misuse of data once obtained. The information requested is not unusual when making card payments by telephone. What may be of concern is a subscription account name different to the card name. Money laundering or fraudulent use of a credit card are two potential issues.

Thread: Old Die Stock
06/11/2020 18:05:10

William, I'm not sure you are correct, assuming you are thread cutting on a rod of the correct diameter surely the crests and troughs of the die limit the depth of cut and presumably it is possible to judge a tight or loose thread with an appropriate female thread (nut).

The box which was falling to pieces certainly had the broad arrow marking but there is no marking on the two diestock holders or the split dies. The set belonged to my late uncle and as the box was falling apart I re-glued the finger joints on the box frame and replaced the ply wood top and bottom. The interior has cut outs which were salvageable and match the diestocks, (one large and one small) the split dies and the taps. From memory there is one tap missing.

I have a Whitworth BSF set in a box which was marked WD although the contents are not so marked. Pretty much rust free. Robert Butler

Dear Neil thank you, I have attended to this. Robert Butler

26/10/2020 22:13:47

I have today received issue 298, delivered by my trusty newsagent who still delivers to the outlying villages. There seems to be a problem with the content!

Pages 9 -13 cutting Corners on a Bandsaw all perfectly fine

Page 14 Readers Tips perfectly fine

Pages 16-17 SDS Hammer drill fine

Page 18 (only) Grit blasting cabinet finishers mid sentence - jumps straight to

Page 27?? Powering a Mars Rover

Pages 28-32 Making a cylinder from the solid - perfectly fine

Pages 32-33 Scribe a line fine

Page 27 (Again) - Mars Rover !!!!!

Pages 28-32 (Again) Making a cylinder from the solid

Page 33 -35 page numbers changed but Scribe a line AGAIN with one extra page (35) adding Angel Eyes!!!

Page 36 A Temporary coupling fine

Page 37-40 A work Holding Sub-Table fine

Page 42 (only) Alignment Device for the Compact 5 finishes mid sentence...

Page 35 Those Angel Eyes again!!

Page 36 Again!! Temporary Coupling

Page 37-40 That b...dy sub table again

Page 42 (only)Again Alignment device for the Compact 5 finishes mid-sentence!!

Pages 51-54 A 5" Rotary Table, not sure if the article is to commence with Part 5, Pressure Pad or if this is missing introductory comment??????

Pages 56-63 Gear Hobbing - fine?

Not surprisingly the contents page is similarly confusing. I do enjoy re-reading articles in MEW but rarely have I had such choice and all in the same issue!! Is it just my copy or have other readers had the same experience?

Thread: Machinery hire?
26/09/2020 22:18:30

Be careful with hire, most firms hire the plant under contract which renders the hirer responsible for loss or damage to the plant. Further you are responsible for any damage you cause whilst using the plant. Cheaper and safer to get in touch with a local contractor who will arrive with a suitable machine and be able to use it safely and if necessary come equipped with a means of removing the sand from site.

Make sure that you ask for a quote to do "the job" rather than pay on a "day rate" basis otherwise you may still find you inherit liability for damage to the machine etc. as above. Think how much even a tyre would cost to replace. Construction Plant Association conditions of hire or Hire Association of Europe conditions refer. It is most unlikely your home insurance will cover this.

Thread: Scaling back forum activity
10/09/2020 19:08:10

The forum is what we post or are permitted to post in the same way as MEW and ME is the sum total of articles submitted and chosen for publication. We don't have to agree with postings or like all that which is published, we can ignore or gloss over and still enjoy the sum total. Some postings are acid drops or just plain ungracious.

However certain members puzzle me as to why they still post as a Newbie after posting for six years until of course one reads the posting. Robert Butler
