It's actually RTFM

Read The Flipping Manual

Thanks, John. I meant to type RTFM, but obviously I'm one letter short of an acronym !
Yes, Diane - so I did type it correctly, before being "blitzed", sorry, "moderated" !

RTM - BEFORE you use the machine in your workshop. It might just save you from serious injury.

Thread: t.i.r.?

What does t.i.r. stand for?
I am sure once someone tells me I will hang my head low in shame of not knowing.

Cheers
Nigel

Rubbish (grin!). We all have to learn. The asking of the question proves that you want to learn, so there is NOTHING to be ashamed of.

How does Donald define an "amateur" ? It appears to be a pejorative term in his vocabulary.

Many thanks to you all for your help and advice on this topic. It is indeed appreciated for a new boy to milling.

Thread: MT2 collet slipping

Might a newbie pose a possibly silly question here - there's no chance that the drawbar had cross-threaded the collet, is there ? Just a thought.

Sorry, folks. Should have made  it clear that it is a 10mm x 10mm rebate..

May I ask for your suggestions and opininons, please, gentlemen.

I have a Warco Mill/drill rated at 550 watts. I need to cut a 10mm rebate on a 1"
steel bar. . It has a maximum low speed rating of 1200 rpm, and a maximum high speed rating of 2200 rpm. I'm currently using a 10mm cutter to cut the rebate.

My question is, should I use a smaller cutter to cut in more than one pass, and what depth of cut should I use ?
The advice of those much more knowledgeable than myself would be much appreciated. (Probably be hard to find someone less knowledgeable than me !)

Like Niloch, having read many of KWIL's posts, I have a healthy respect for his knowledge and ability. Strong suspicion that he is being slightly mischievous, wonder what gave me that impression. Even cheaper is to ask one of your fellow pedestrians "What's the time, please ?"

My prezzie was a subscription to MEW.
Pity I haven't received no. 172 yet....
Perhaps I wasn't such a good boy after all.  Or maybe NE Hampshire is too deep in the back of beyond.

Happy Christmas.

Trevor

I've got 172 in NE Hampshire, from my local Smiffs. Smirk, smirk !
And my Xmas present was a Cowells Vertical mill (delivered early), which I haven't played with much because it's b******n freezing in my workshop..
Haven't bought SWMBO anything yet (but she is looking at the clothes catalogues (shudder, shudder ) )

And I couldn't attend, because I was required for domestic duties, SWMBO having broken her left wrist (tripped over the rug in the lounge).  So I feel thorougly grumpy because i missed out on it. grump, grump !

Thread: Which slideway oil is best?
25/12/2010 22:46:10
Thanks, fellas, for your advice. This is specifically labelled as "lubricating oil", (not the traditional "3 in 1") but it can be relegated to the old bookcase that does duty as a canstand, and I'll get something more suitable. Again, comments much appreciated.

I am the possessor of a spray can of "3 in 1" lubricating oil. Does anyone have any knowledge or comments on its suitability ?

Thread: Clutch in push rod to disconnect drive?
05/12/2010 22:06:13
What about a sleeve (which slides along) on the pushed member, secured to the pushing member by a form of fork arrangement, but secured by a locked collar on the pushed member to secure it. Lugs on the first sliding sleeve could fit into recesses in that securing collar to lock it, when you want to revolve the pushed rod.

Ramon,

No need to worry about being able to precis a bit more. Most of us, I feel, are quite happy with your descriptions, which are easy to read and understand. As a beginner (with 'L' plates !) I could follow them very well.

I've also got a DeWalt 738 bandsaw. There is (was?) a DeWalt739 which is a variable speed version, but I don't know what motor/mechanism was used. Anyone know ?

Also useful when the outside drain is clogged up with congealed detergent residue from the washing machine. In addition to all the uses already mentioned.
