Reading this thread, I was hanging on for dear life, but I think I broadly understand what was going on. Thanks Andrew, and all the other contributors, for the enlightenment and detailed explanations. Now back to my knitting.

One wonders whether when these machines "come of age" all those machining skills will be largely rendered obsolete. Will we be giving our lathes away at garage sale prices, with the scrap dealers queuing up to collect them, or will the bottom have fallen out of the scrap metal market ?

Since when did using the best technique (laser profiling) constitute cheating ? I can't pretend to know much about this topic, but using the best technique surely would probably save trouble further down the line.

I get GPO'd about some of the supposed hostility on here. As far as I'm concerned, publish and be damned. I think that this article will be of interest to quite a lot of people, especially for the manufacturing processes involved, not necessarily the finished article. The only caveat I would suggest is that the article should run for a reasonable amount of time (say) 12 or 15 issues, not up to Part 46 where readers get fed up with it. It might be best to break into logical chunks and make a feature of that chunk on the front cover.
