As a muddle-engineer trying to turn a large bar on a Cowells lathe, this thread is very useful, Thanks fellas, ! Dennis

I'd bet that anyone who has had a length of thin rod in the chuck rotating at speed has found that out already ! Dennis |

I wonder how many of us would have George's patience - take photos, measure up in unbelievable detail, do castings, AND then the machining ? A great compliment to his abilities. Well done, sir ! Dennis

Thread: Beaver mill |
17/04/2014 13:35:17 |
Posted by John Stevenson on 18/03/2014 13:49:06: To be honest here and this mill is a very close model to my Beaver CNC mill, in fact this one was a step up from mine being on servo's and has a tool changer they are old hat now.
It's not a question of " Is this what manufacturing has come to in this country" is more a question of things have moved on and this thing is a total dinosaur. No one who is into manufacturing with CNC could make one of these things pay today.
Not powerful enough for modern carbide tooling, too slow in spindle speeds and feeds and no enclosure to allow flood cooling.
Geoff, tiptoe past it - let it rust in piece. Quite right, John. Better move on before the dinosaurs posting on here decide they want to reactivate steam engines and horse buses. Dwnnis

Thread: Lathe facing convex or concave |
22/03/2014 22:24:35 |
How many angels can dance on the head of a pin ? Would a surface created by 3D printing be convex or concave, and if so, so what? Dennis |
Thread: Optical centre punch. |
05/03/2014 21:51:43 |
Got mine from Chronos, quite useful. Make sure that you have decent lighting where you are using it, so you can see the place to make the punch mark. Also, like Frank said, piece of sellotape helps to keep it steady. Dennis |

There is some great workmanship on here. I feel that because something may not be "Sandown Finish" (to coin a phrase) in no way detracts from the skill or the workmanship put into it and exhibited. Dennis

Thread: Armchair Generals |
15/02/2014 21:41:39 |
It may be considered symptomatic of society as a whole. Instead of "I regret that I must beg to differ" or similar tone, "You're wrong, sunshine" or some equally aggressive rebuke. News is reported as "he denies the claim" instead of "he repudiated/rebutted the allegation", the implication being that the one trying to refute the allegation is lying, which is not necessarily true.
A saddening reflection on modern life. Dennis

Thread: Use of language |
15/12/2013 17:00:52 |
What is an expletive ? What language does OMG's great nephew use when out of earshot (or webshot) of his parents ? He might explain to his great-nephew that clear precise English makes it easier to be understood, but that others may well use decidedly slovenly language. Dennis |

I shouldn't worry, Ketan. As they say in the plumbing world, at the end of the day it's all a load of water admission restraints.

Usual grumble about shortage of seating, but the exhibition was very good. Seemed to be a very high quality of club exhibits, and the first floor exhibits were excellent. While possibly slightly invidious to single out certain exhibits, the galleon on the Guild of Model Wheelwrights definitely caught my eye. I was disappointed that the superb Shay on the Staines club stand wouldn't fit in my shopping bag, but "you can't win'em all". All in all, the standard of exhibits I thought was exceptionally high, and the exhibitors are to be congratulated on the standard achieved. D |
