Thread: The Diamond Tool Holder
09/05/2014 08:34:55

I too am using their toolholders and have used their Crobalt tool steel on cast iron, which worked well.

I'm not sure I'm getting the best possible finish and would be interested to hear/see how you hone the radius John H.

Thread: Importing machinery from China

I'd be interested to hear from anyone with experience of DIY importing machinery, e.g.a Sieg mill, from China.

Thanks

Thread: Grinding Rest.
15/05/2013 18:30:37

Harold - the grinder runs at 2850; the wide wheel is a WA-100-F-7V so somewhat softer and finer grit than you mention. Would you recommend a change as you suggest or will this do the job but wear faster? The second wheel is NAS-80-P-6V (for carbide sharpening?)

For drill sharpening I'm intending to use the swing jig, the 'modern jig' you mention in your book, mounted on the fine feed base by Jim Wheltren (MEW 141), hoping this produces better results than the basic jig. Need to do some experimentation with this, fortunately I've got plenty of drills to play with.

Carl - thanks, I wasn't aware there was a tool for the job, added to my shopping list

Hi

I've just finished making the (simple) rest and just setting up my Creusen grinder which is fitted with a 150x40 AO wheel. My intention was to do tool and drill sharpening on the side of the wheel rather than the front face, so I don't have to consider the ground surface being concave. I am planning to be able to fix the rest base radially or axially using magnetic bases. I'm not sure though about dressing the side of the wheel, is it OK to do this using a t-shaped dressing tool?

Thread: DRO fitted to an ML10
27/11/2012 19:16:08

I read a thread some time ago by someone who'd installed DRO on an ML10 by fitting the encoder strip under the cross-slide. I remember the article had lots of photos in it, what I can't remember is where the article was and I've given up searching for it.

Anyone with a better memory than me who can point me in the right direction (I think it was this site)

Thanks

Thread: 3MT or R8
17/10/2012 13:39:16

SX3 is my preference. At less than half the weight of the VMC though, does this mean its less muscular and I really ought to reconsider going for heavyweight options. Also looked at WM18 but no R8 option.

17/10/2012 12:53:30

R8 taper and dovetail column are top priorities for my (first) mill. What's peoples views on using an r8 to mt2 adapter set-up to continue using my existing tools?

Have you seen the earlier posts in this thread? Look at 1/3/2012 posts, there's a mobile no. there.

Thread: Travelling Steady Question - Speed 10 / ML10 Owners

Clive

It may be that you have the wrong bolt. My TS is threaded but the top part of the bolt is a plain shank about 5/8" long so it slips right through the TS. I suppose those clever Myford people didn't want us to lose it.

Thread: Myford Lathe service

After reading this thread I emailed Darren at the above mail address, he and Pete have been to service my ML10 and I must say I'm impressed with them and the results after they spent over 3 hours checking and adjusting to original specs.
Thread: Simplex guard irons

Many thanks. The back guards were OK, I've shortened the front ones to 1 1/4" and they're all the same clearance now. On the front the joggle on mine is bigger - the point of the guard is directly over the centre of the rail.

They're the offset angle plates bolted to the front and back ends of the mainframes, cosmetic but shown in Martin Evans' drawings. My Simplex was built by my father. The poitioning on the frames is fine but they're too long as there's to little clearance when the loco is on rails.

Thanks

Can any Simplex builder tell me what clearance they've used from the wheel rim to the foot of the guard irons. I read on the Simplex site that there were no dimensions given for these in the ME articles, but don't have any drawings now. I think 0.45"?
Thanks

Thread: What happened to the Myford sale thread?
16/07/2011 12:30:17
I just spent an hour there, arrived at 9:20 and the car park was quite full, much busier than an open day.. The stuff available included the usual new small tool/parts they have on their open days(not discounted) plus a lot of used/secondhand/shop floor tools, vices, chucks etc; the good stuff here was going quickly. Top shop set out with new/used lathes, these didn't appear to have been discounted, some 'sold', some being wheeled out the door.

Chris Moore was there chatting to acquantances. A film crew arrived just as I was leaving.

It was quite sad really, end of an era.

I have just spoken to a very helpful lady at RDG who confirmed their company has purchased the contents of the stores and are right now in process of packing it for relocation to W Yorks from where they intend selling the original true Myford parts through a separate website. I didn't get any timescale for when this business will be up and running.

'Mark' is the author of the italicised article I copied into the post so he's not likely to get your message. Sorry, I can understand the confusion in my post.

I'm going along anyway early doors and could do a posting from there. It would be equally helpful if our Editor could confirm the story or otherwise on Friday. And I had a free pass from the wife who, when told about the closure replied 'are you going over to see if there's anything you want...........' deep joy!

Just read this on the myfordlathes yahoo group, this is a copy-paste jobbie:

The following was posted earlier this monring on the uk.rec.models.engineering mailing list. I have not tried to verify the comments but Mark Rand is usually a trustworthy source.

Also spoke to them today. They had no choice about selling to RDG, the liquidators have the only and final say about things. The office folks are less than happy about selling the stock to RDG due to their past practice of selling fake Myford stuff. Oh well.

The plant/machinery and any un-sold second hand machines are still available, but spares are all spoken for.

Since I'm 10 minutes from them I'll pop along with my spares requirements but its not looking promising.

The £29.99 subon that site is for the online mag not the posted version isn't it? Which is the same cost as the ME site....or am I missing something too?
