Thread: Harrogate and CNC
11/05/2013 11:20:48

John.

I've never quite got to grips with CAD/CAM as the tutorials seem to expect the user to already know the basics. Is this package user friendly to any one who might need their hand holding to get started?

regards.

Mick

Thread: Help to ID some tools?
11/05/2013 09:57:43

A few of the accessories from the lathe that belonged to a friend's uncle, which I stripped down and packed up. The whole lathe and supporting kit fetched a lot of pennies

I think Jason is on the right track. I once stripped down and packed away a very old and rare Victorian wood turning lathe in order to clear a workshop, the photo's look similar to some of the pieces of kit that came with it.

Thread: HT leads
30/04/2013 17:00:12

Electronics has never been my strong point, but I'm currently trying to sort out the ignition on my latest I/C engine, all that's really needed now is connecting up the four contacts in the distributor to the plugs and the lead from the coil to the distributor. I bought some cored H/T lead, but at 6mm diameter its a bit big and would look clumsy coming out of the distributor. Does the team think that standard electrical cable is suitable for this application.

Thanks.

Thread: DRO's and cold.
10/04/2013 08:49:49

Leaving the DRO on over night you should insure there's no problem and will stop any condensation, especially in a cold shed, but modern systems should be ok any way. A far cry from the days when god was a boy and anything electronic had to warm for half an hour or so.

Just don't tell anybody, seems the best idea to me.

Thread: Tool Post Nut
24/03/2013 17:25:48

Never bother to find out what the "generic part" was for, I just made up a spacer and continued to use the original handle

Thread: Hex Silver Steel/Tool Steel ??
13/03/2013 17:06:25

You'll probably have to source high carbon steel and heat treat it. If its for a punch then only the tip needs to be hard, with the shank tempered to a deep blue so it with stands the shock of hammering. Back when god was a boy we used to make small chipping chisels from square carbon steel, then harden them, I'm still using some of them today.

Thread: M10 x1 long reach spark plugs
13/03/2013 16:58:07

Doe's any one know of a supplier of long reach M10 x 1 spark plugs, 12mm would be ideal. The standard length seems to be 7mm.

Thanks

Thread: Help please on brass

in my experience Milton Keynes Metal are seldom beaten on price, but if you your is complex you may have to wait a couple of weeks on delivery. Usual no connection caveats apply.

Thread: Identification of Machine Vice
04/03/2013 09:37:34

Looks like it might be the top half of a compound angle vice as there are no direct clamping lugs only the two holes in the base, which would have held it to the adjustable base plate

Thread: Cutting fluids

for all drilling, tapping and reaming on all the materials you mention except cast iron which is machined dry ( in industary it is sometimes cooled by compressed air) try Tapmatic gold, you should be able to trace in online, a 500ml can will last years as you only need a couple of drops per application.

Thread: Silver steel increase in diameter on hardening.
25/02/2013 14:03:01

If you normalise the component by heating to a cherry red and leave to cool, preferably in a container filled with lime before hardening, should help to stop any movement, however small, caused by the heat treatment. This is especially true if the component has been subjected to several machining operations

Thread: Anecdotes 2
23/01/2013 11:27:33

Back when god was a boy I was shown a method of checking very large diameters with a suitable steel bar with points turned at either end. One end was held on the bottom ID while the point on the other end was arched across until it touched one side of the ID and a chalk mark made, it was then arched to touch the opposite side of the ID and another chalk mark made. The diameter could then be calculated to a few thousandths of inch by triangulation.

Tap tennon blocks into the Tee nut slots and simply advance the work piece along the table, ensuring that the job is tight against the tennons when re-clamping

Thread: Thread chaser
20/01/2013 10:11:24

I haven't used a hand chaser since I was in my teens, I think the main reasonn for my choice was that all the old turners had fingers and thumbs missing
