Thread: 70 Years of the Myford Super 7
03/07/2023 11:21:26

Yes and the BOXFORD lathes were made 7 years before the Myford 7. Should we celebrate that ?? Anyway, what is so special about 70 years old apart from the fact that there is not much else to write about ?

Thread: Repair a small cast bell

If you are going to attempt silver solder or braze, you need to heat to red heat, let it cool and then give the mating surfaces a good brush with a fine wire brush to remove surface carbon, then proceed with the braze or whatever.

However, I would advise the 'owner' that it could be a complete failure and worse off than in its present state should the process fail.

Good luck and tell us what happened next.

Thread: hand pump for vertical boiler
01/07/2023 15:29:59

Duncan, You didn't say if you had injectors and/or shaft driven pump(s). If you are just using a hand pump to keep up with up with steam usage, don't make it too small as you don't want to be pumping all the time.

If you are using it for initial filling of the boiler, too small a pump will take ages to fill the boiler.

1) Do you need to remove the blower pipe - if not, silver solder the pipe in place?

2) On my 5" SPEEDY loco, on one end, there is the blower valve which is attached to the boiler via a flange with 4 screws, the other end passes through the smokebox tube plate. The blower tube is threaded 5/32 x 40tpi. The tube plate bush is threaded 1/4" x 40tpi and a fitting is made with a 5/32" internal thread and 1/4" external thread. The tube itself has a couple of small bends in it to allow a bit of a spring allowing a bit of tolerance in misaligned threads. Once the tube has been machined, anneal it so that when the bolted flange is tightened up, the blower tube will find its "adjusted" length.

I can send drawings if you Pm me.

Tighten your cross slide gibs a bit more - the screws on the right hand side (usually).

Sometimes a simple wooden jig will suffice. Choose a hard wood like oak or ash. These are a couple of door stops I made for an older Toyota jeep where I had to mill out a section on the slant. To stop things moving about, I put a bolt through one of the holes and a tool makers clamp to stop the component lifting off of the jig

Thread: Household paint. An observation!
19/06/2023 06:31:16

We live in an area of extremes, +42C in summer and -16C in winter sometimes. Oil or water based paints rarely last more than 3 years before they flake off wooden surfaces. The old barn doors next to our house still have paint on them from 30 years ago which would have been the old oil based paint with lead in it, probably mixed from linseed oil, whiting, base colour pigments and lead compounds.

Why have modern paints not found the secret of longevity or is it just commercial sense not to sell paint that lasts.

Ah! Now I know what to do with a similar slice of rail for my son who is in the business so to speak.

Last year he gave me a rivet that was recovered from the Sydney Harbour bridge during the repairs. Always good to get something useful !

I think you meant topslide Justin. This would give you more rigidity of the cutting tool BUT you would need a special spacer to get the tool up to the centre line and your cross slide would need 'T' slots or a tapped hole to attach the tool post / spacer to. I have never bothered doing it.

Thread: Workshop going into storage - Rust Prevention?
16/06/2023 14:48:00

I am not sure that I would use Owatrol - a good product for painting rusty iron to leave a protected rustic finish, also use as an addition to oil paint to kill rust. Also good as a varnish on very thin wood like wood turned lamp shades.

If you painted it onto taps, dies, precision tools etc it would be like varnishing them !!

My two penneth worth.

Thread: Air in steam boiler
15/06/2023 18:16:17

When steam is raised in any boiler, there is quite a lot of air in the boiler to start with. What happens to this air and does the power of the raised steam increase as the air is driven off?

Should the first few minutes after raising steam be used to drive off the air ?

Thread: Freesat recorder HDD
14/06/2023 19:20:47

Hi Malc, I replaced my drive in a HUMAX recorder a year ago. The drive I fitted was 2x the size of the original as that was what was available to me. Installed the drive, formatted it - all OK. The software reported the new size. The other day it stopped recording with the message "Insufficient space on the drive" reporting the original drive size.

The software is set to auto delete old recordings to make space for new recordings. It seems that one part of the software reports actual available space and another sets a fixed limit of the original drive.

I have now re-formatted the drive and it is recording again OK.
