Thread: How hard is an induction hardened bed supposed to be
20/08/2015 21:14:29

My colchester student bed cant be touched with a vigorous filing so i'm assuming its induction hardened

As they were available either as is or hardened why would one choose one over the other?

If tuffsaws dont know the length then simply measure your old one..then stick a label on the machine with the correct size for future ref

Most of my blades seem to break at the weld .Ian at tuffsaws will reweld them if they fail but i've never taken him up on his offer as I'm sure I;ve had a good life out of the blades before it fails

That locking bolt with the half nuts on should just slide out

remove the nut and put some more washers under it to pull it out or a pair of big screwdrivers under the washer thats there now to slide it out

Or is that not what you are wanting to remove?

If you look at the bidder who has bravely bid and the lathe that the seller is selling also ,the bidders have low feedback and have been bidding a lot on lots of items and quite a lot of bid retractions something fishy going on here I feel

I've just been turning my workshop upside down to find 5 cans NOS that I had bought for a startrite machine

You would have been welcome to some of them but I fear I've thrown them

I bought them from a ebay seller a pack of 6 cans all sealed etc

however it had gone off it dried very metalic looking with the silver glitter coming to the surface and leaving a rough surface i stirred it to death but it made little difference

whether adding something may have made a difference

Thread: Ground Flat Stock
02/08/2015 11:35:22

I use a supllier in sheffield that stocks square ground indeed grinds it on the premises but they also stock key steel thats fine for woodworking tool stocks

I would imagine £10 would buy you 3 metres of 12mm square

Ian

where are you ? i could put some in the post from my stocks

I would start with some round bar and mill your square end using a indexer chop off and repeat to how ever many you need

then grasp the square end in a 4 jaw in the lathe and turn the taper

Thread: Burnerd ec collets...dismantling
10/07/2015 12:03:57

Just to be clear the 1.5mm movement is the in and out sliding radially so the varnish thats sticking the blade will not come out . the solvent may go in but the varnish will reharden after a while....the fit is very tight in the body even with no lube

I did try soaking in mek for a while

10/07/2015 11:51:38

I think I've sorted it now

I've flattened the washer and by compressing the body the washer slips on...it wont compress when the blades are in

3 blades slip in easily into say 1,2 and 3 position

the others have to go in cock eyed but they eventually slipped into place

then replace the springs and its good to go

The blades are such a good sliding fit and very limited movement < 2mm that i'm not sure that solvent will get in and remove the varnish like substance

But now I know how to take them to bits so alls well

10/07/2015 09:43:15

dsc00564 (medium).jpgWell i sacrificed a collet that had broken blades and i'm still not the wiser how to get it to bits

I removed the springs first thinking that one blade might slip in and pull through the middle

But then had to remove the washer with a big screwdriver and hammer...it does fit into a groove

The blades were really gummy I dont think any amount of solvent would have got these clean

The washer does fit into a groove in the collet body without the blades the washer would possibly spring the body inwards letting the washer slip into the groove but then I cant get the blades in

anybody any idea's

I dont seem to be able to get the washer off it looks like it may fit into a shallow groove

08/07/2015 19:33:47

Ive tried that no joy so far

08/07/2015 19:01:20

Does anyone know how to remove the blades and springs from burnerd ec collets

I have a set which look almost unused but are sticky they wont open up after closing without help

Theres a washer at the front which looks like if that came off the blades would slide out

or am i missing a trick

Thread: Hand cleaner

Is Borax really banned in the uk

or is this supplier aiming it at industrial users?

Does anyone else use it?

It is available in the uk but not widely or easily

John

whats special about the headstock centre ?

does it have induction hardened bedways and if it does can you run a file across them? and cut them?

.

The headstock centre is one of those stubby 4 1/2 Morse or similar with an MT3 in the centre of it. Not that special but hard to find when you want one.

It says it has induction hardened bed ways, red sticker just visible against apron handwheel in first pic but I'm not going to try with a file.

Cast will harden but not to the same Brinnell as steel so often people try a file but it still cuts.

What they should say is Induction hardened harder than plain cast iron. I think that explains it better.

It was just in a previous post you had mentioned that even an induction hardened bed was still very soft

my student which hasn't got a sticker on it a file wont touch it at all at teh end by the tailstock ...can you see if a bed has been hardened? colour change?

also mine hasnt got a serial number on the bed does that mean its been reground?

JS's quote

"Also induction hardened bed ways are a joke. Everybody relates the hardening to what you get on vise jaws and tools. Forget it, by the virtue of being cast iron and not steel the most you will get is 23 -24 Rockwell which is what soft steel is to start with."
