here they are you can have any one you desire

theres a benbo Mk 2 cut down slightly so more of a 1.5

that will go to over 6ft tall

then theres a uniloc one with a horizontal mount (this is the spindles one and lightest

then a triloc one meatier and heavier than the uniloc

Thread: Bearing out of position - how to correct?
13/08/2021 13:09:42

Cut in half on the rod…. drill a hole down one end ….turn a spigot on the other and sweat together when you have taken out the 4mm

or drill and tap both sides and join with a stud

Thread: FOBCO STAR - BEARINGS?
09/08/2021 14:29:53

Its difficult to say with certainty as there was many spindles and bearings sizes used.

when you have it apart the numbers will be on the bearings and they are easy to get from any bearing supplier.

i would recommend fitting taper bearings for the spindle rather than the magneto bearings sometimes fitted. They are a straight replacement.

Thread: Collet chuck identification please guys.

21/07/2021 17:13:46

Richard

do you have thread gauges to check that your new backplate has the same tpi as your spindle?

if not a piece of blutack or plasticene on your finger will make an impression so you can check against your spindle

Thread: Help with machining Titanium
04/07/2021 13:36:35

Some years ago a chap asked if i could make some rings out of titanium (8 in total all different sizes) he supplied the material 2 “ dia by 12 “

it machined very well only lost 2 due to work hardening problems..

they were to give to parents grand parents and god parents to his first born child.

after doing them to his satisfaction i tried very hard ( as an experiment) to set fire to the swarf to no avail..

Fast forward a few years and my niece brought a new suitor round for a family meal.and the chap had one of my rings on…he was a god parent to the child….small world

14/06/2021 13:31:42

Brilliant Bill

13/06/2021 14:58:22

I ended up buying the set of these as i thought they may come in useful for holding taps

however taps wont fit with out making the square much smaller

drills will fit but need a pair of flats grinding

Thread: Fobco Star Quill Spring - Removal
08/06/2021 13:03:36

The spring and cup that it lives in is easily removed ..take the ball of the handle and slip the handle out. Under the casting is a grub screw loosen this and the tension will be released.

then you can slip the gear out towards the left when standing at the front.

then remove the friction cap off the spring and with care you can remove the spring but theres no need really to remove it unless its broken

Thread: Watchmaker's lathe belting advice
02/06/2021 15:54:09

Massimo

how much tension are you putting on the belt and what diameter is the material?

i use a lot of 4,5,6mm habiset material on printing finishing equipment and the pulleys are as you describe with no signs of slipping. On a belt set you measure it loosely on the pulleys and then remove 5% then weld up

Thread: What are these morse taper collets for?
01/06/2021 10:38:14

From the description on eBay i read that they were parallel inside and MT2 on the outside..i presumed that the hole half way up was for helping out a drill or shaft inserted..?

01/06/2021 09:29:27

I’ve seen these mt2 collets for sale on eBay...

what do you use these for?

i have ones with a draw bolt to hold work or cutters

but how do these hold things?

Thread: Hydrogen home heating
22/05/2021 17:33:53

There was an article in the times today (Sat 22nd) page 21 about JCB developing a hydrogen fuelled IC engine

using pressurised hydrogen tanks

it produces no co and nearly zero N0X.....just water out the exhaust

so where does the water come from? if you feed an engine with h2 and atmospheric air (turbocharged) and burn it what happens to the hydrogen and oxygen? Is it destroyed? Or does it recombine to form water?

as i said I’m not a chemist
