Thread: WM18 strip down
16/02/2022 12:37:59

RMA. I bought one some years ago and stripped it down to carry it to my basement workshop.

as you say theres a powerful gas strut from the base to the head and thats the hardest thing to refit.

I didn’t use anything to strip it or refit it other than my muscle power.

Just be careful if theres any shims between column and base.

move the head down onto the table then remove the head…that perhaps weighs 35- 40 kg

other parts are easy to disassemble

Thread: Plasma cutter at lidl
13/02/2022 17:21:37

Bill if you want one I’ll get it for you Thursday am or Wednesday night after 7pm they usually have them on display and accept them at the till

13/02/2022 14:13:19

Well it has a 16 amp plug on it as supplied but even on full power (40 amps) its only drawing 10 or so

13/02/2022 12:59:17

For some time i had been looking out for the plasma cutter at Lidl and the other week they had a few of them in my local store unadvertised mind..

i bought one and I’m impressed with its performance so far

on test cuts it cuts up to 8mm very cleanly and 12 mm a little roughly.

This model has a built in compressor and is reasonably light in weight.

anyway the Lidl weekly flyer says they will be available generally in store from Thursday the 17th feb

I’d grind the bearing through taking care not to cut into the shaft as soon as its through it will slip off

I always use a pair of side cutters pliers to remove keys….never fails. Use pliers parallel with the shaft grip the sides of the key and lift it out…

Thread: Largeish bsw taps
29/12/2021 09:52:48

i have had a problem this last few days with 1&3/8” bsw taps

I have had one a presto brand that i chipped a few teeth off being greedy with cutting under power in the lathe.

I always single point cut the thread and then pass the tap through to clean it up.

i bought some nice looking ones off eBay.

came to use them yesterday and i cant get my head around how different they are in sizes

so theres a RLL brand spiral cut one that measures 1.400 across the tips

a presto one that is 1.380

and a CEJ thats only 1.314 across

none of them look worn but the CEJ has in very faint etching “. 1/2 SER. “

Why are these all different sizes and if i try to use the spiral cut one it cuts completely wrong..it wont pick up the screw cut thread and seems to cut a new form completely.

Didn’t you do one of these a year or so ago Martin?

have you a a lathe with a big enough bore to slide the handle down?

otherwise grind (with your belt sander )them square and carefully marking out and drill for a piece of threaded studding to fix new knobs

Thread: Vintage voltage

I cant imagine that it would be ever economically viable to do this

stripping out the drive chain fuel system engine etc then installing huge battery’s and drive motors on a even 4-5 yr old car would be a non starter done commercially

so many cars are scrapped by the time they reach 10 years old as it is ..theres hardly any old cars running around as daily drivers.

Thread: How much is a life worth

I fully agree that looking at a mobile screen/texting/watching a video or playing a video game is dangerous and should be dealt with. But holding a phone to your ear…is that so unsafe?

you can have a phone call on hands free legally

you can have a conversation with a passenger legally

you can drive a car with one arm legally with no other modifications.

you can get a cigarette/cigar out and light it with fire…legally?

though someone was prosecuted for eating a kit Kat sometime ago

you can adjust anything built into the car whilst driving legally…..though going through menus on a modern dash display fills me with dread .

so is holding the phone to your ear so bad?

Just checked one of my bits was 71 plus vat

at aluminium warehouse who i do use a lot for alloy their price for the same length in 40mm in BDMS is £184 plus vat

so my stockholder is still cheap

04/11/2021 13:21:27

I just called in my friendly steel stockholders today to restock my mild steel and after i had loaded it all in my car was shocked that since the last time perhaps 2 years ago the price had increased from 1000£ Tonne to 2400£ Tonne

this batch was £360

Thread: Wanner grease-gun thread ?
02/11/2021 17:12:50

When i want to grease the quill on my fobco I take the nipple out and grease it with a male ended gun.then put the small nipple back in

or if you are desperate to leave the original small nipples in situ make a small adapter with a nipple and a short length of tube ending in a fitting to go on the small ones
