Hello from Barnsley

Hi everyone - just bought a Warco GH1236 and super major vario milling machine. I’m not an engineer. I have a 1939 Ariel Square Four motorbike for restoration. Thank you already to the person who recommended the pm1236 manual.

id like to know if there are any engineers who are familiar with these machines - I’ve set them up, that would be interested in giving some tuition.

i’m not Looking for free lessons. I’m happy to pay for a course using these machines. I’m in Barnsley - I taught science many years ago in Sheffield so was hoping to find someone local. Still working so a couple of weekends ?

i know it’s an unusual request but why not learn from an expert properly. I’m a diving instructor for Bsac, so summer is flat out diving and training - not as much in winter so this would be an ideal time for me to learn and practise

Welcome along to the forum Paul from another motorcycle tinkerer. 1929 & 1932 BSA Sloper's keep me entertained, I am a long way from Barnsley to help but good luck with your new machinery. Any questions just ask, someone will know the answer.

I think that you might find it difficult to encourage someone to give you lessons as such, in the current pandemic situation. Like you, I'm not a trained engineer, but self-taught mangler of metal. There's a lot to be said for getting some good books and doing a bit of reading before switching on any machine and there's no better substitute than making something simple on the lathe and getting to know its (and your) capabilities, even if it's only a pile of swarf. Just remember to keep your body parts and anything attached to them out of the way of the whizzy-round bits!

Good luck with your machines and the Ariel restoration. I'm sure many on here, me included, would be interested to follow the rebuild.

And of course both Neil Wyatt and Jason Bellamy have produced books on the basics of lathework and Milling machine operations respectively available from ArcEuroTrade.

+1 for the books recommended by John Hinkley. All good info on the basics..

Wortley Top Forge MES is in Thurgoland, 6 miles from Barnsley. Well worth joining for the face to face contacts and general advice.

You may find folk there who own the same machines. If not, they will will certainly expand the basic principles and methods of operation.

Even if not, the basics remain the same, just that the levers may be indifferent locations, but perform the same functions. You can learn a lot from being with someone who knows what they are doing.

All the best for the square four restoration, I would not like to tackle an old bike rebuild without my lathe and mill. Keep asking questions as you come across problems, the friendly bunch on here will get you sorted.

had a good chat with Ian earlier. Just watching blonde hacks on milling for beginners

hole centre finding - got a feeling I may need that skill when I start to screw studs out of a 82 year old bike
