Thread: Small part holding

I made this small parts vice some years ago and is very useful.

I believe it is a GH Thomas design and appeared in either ME or MEW magazine.

Watched the fireworks in Sao Bras (Portugal), with a few glasses of port and then to bed.

New years resolution to find my bag of Welsh steaming coal (if her indoors has not burned in on the fire) and get my boiler and Stuart compound steamed up.

Bought a pair of ER25 collet blocks a while ago. As useful as they are ER collets don't hold short bits very well. So decided to make a pair of hex and square for my 3C collets. Just used some bit of steel I happened to have in a suitable size.

Collets are drawn in by a threaded ring.

Also made a 3C step collet out of brass to use for holding some cylinder covers I am making. Made from two pieces of brass brazed together (to save on waste).

Thread: Left hand threads

Many moons ago at an auto jumble I bought a box of three 5/16 BSF taps. Wasn't till I got home that I noticed the words "Left Hand' on the box. Never had a need for one, let alone three. If you have a problem getting one let me know and I will pop in the post.

Thread: Making BA studs

Thanks Juddy for the link. They apparently can make to size. So I will see what they charge.

I wanted to make my own as those I could find ready made were either to long or short. I assume they are able to source material in the correct size.

I need to make a quantity of 4 and 6 BA studs. Does anyone know of a supplier that stocks steel and or brass in 7/64" and 9/64" sizes suitable for studs. To save reducing oversize rod.

Thread: Which collet chuck for a Warco GH1236 lathe

The good thing with 5C is that you can have a back-stop screwed into the collet for repetition work, they can hold short pieces of work, emergency collets can be machined to a special size and lastly square and hex collets

Thread: Making a Dickson style QCTP
08/08/2017 16:10:23

I have used a Dickson tool post on my Boxfords for some 30 years and have never had a holder come loose or fail to fit properly. The holders (15) are mixtures those bought from Boxford, auto jumbles and few I have made myself.

Those I made myself. I measured a Dickson holder, roughed out on the vertical mill and then finished the "V"s with a 90 deg cutter on the horizontal spindle of the Tom Senior. No problem with fit, just need to measure the "V"s separation and depth as accurately as you can.
