Thread: What did you do Today 2018
02/02/2018 11:30:22

Thanks for your comments Martin. I did ponder for sometime as to what size to make the holes. Settled for 26mm to just catch the bottom of the taper. In these particular holders the holes could be somewhat bigger so the tools settled past the taper, but that would be no use for the ordinary collets, as they would just fall though.

The material is water resistant mdf as I find that a lot more stable than the ordinary brown stuff, especially in an unheated workshop. Excellent point made about oak, diabolical for steel tooling.

Finished a couple of holders for my R8 tooling which had been scattered around on a piece of ply.

Another of the small advantage of the NT 3 phase system is when changing gear. My lathe manual states the motor should be stopped when changes are required. Unless the gears are perfectly lined up, changes can be somewhat difficult. Whereas winding the revs down to minimum, almost stopped, means the gears just slip into engagement.

I've had the Femi 2 speed for many years. I first saw it demo'ed at one of the ME shows at Ali Pally. The vendor was cutting 1mm slices from a circular bar of 50mm steel....

Thread: How effective are phase converters

More than one post on various threads here talk about sharing inverter across several motors. And vfds can be had relatively cheaply on eBay. Time to bury the rotary converter imho.

That's an interesting observation. Would a vfd supply allow the powered drawbar, machine light, and X drive motor to used without the main spindle motor rotating?

My machine (in gallery) was only available in a 3 phase version unfortunately. The pic shows the rotary next to the machine, before the noise became too intolerable.

Another vote for a Transwave rotary. The local electric company wanted circa £65K to supply 3 phase. I was a bit lucky in getting a 100A main fuse in place of the 63A. surprise

The inverter works very well, it is not load dependent as are the static ones. Have to agree that the only downside is the noise of the thing. I moved it to another room, so not quite so bad. Just turning the radio up a bit, helps though.

They are all sent out together, any differences can only be down to the Post Office.

I thought Gary was on to something with his W & S, but BB knocked that one on the head. surprise The difference in PO efficiencies is interesting.

Having seen many examples of stops for milling items to length, I do not recall seeing one for 'long bits', hence a little diversion to welding my new trolleys.

Faced with the task of having to make 8 uprights the same size, this is what I came up with, (few others in album).

I have still got a lot to learn about posting and at the moment I can't see how to insert another's post, as a reference, into mine. Colin

Just under your message use "Quote".

The gotcha is that you have to line- feed / new line / down arrow or whatever, to get rid of the line down the side of the quoted text. If not done your new text looks as if its part of that quoted.

Thread: Arc euro and parcelforce. Great partners
30/11/2017 19:00:30

It it's now general 'experiences', and not wishing to take anything away from Arcs excellent service, one of the best I have found personally is the Toolstation / Parcel Force setup. Anything ordered before 7pm is always delivered next day.

Our local My Hermes are superb, for both collection and delivery.

Talking to a DPD driver earlier this week, it seems that there are two DPDs....quite what that's about I have no idea. It could be the proper one with the 'I hour delivery window' is the expensive one, and there is also a cheaper get-it when you get-it system. Has anyone any info?

I did not see them mentioned in the credits at the end of an excellent program, an excellent program (sorry Guy).

Did anyone?

Thread: Knurling wheels help
08/11/2017 16:20:14

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but the info supplied (by me) above is incorrect.blush

The correct Hemingway wheels are 5/8" x 3/16" x 1/4" bore. It does seem a bit of an odd-ball size and they are not stocked in many places. Cromwell Tools do keep them but are rather expensive, but Hemingway does not keep much choice. Cromwell have them in Fine, Medium and Coarse versions.

When required for cnc purposes my output from Turbocad is in *.dxf format. That file is opened in an obscure program called XMC-E which is what formulates the G code output to the Pacer cnc machine. As far as I know, 'ordinary' Turbocad will not output G code directly to any cnc machine.

I didn't know the answer either...but am curious why you use that particular tool. My favoured method would either be 'rubber stamp' or copy/paste from the right-click drop-down menu. Or, if several copies required, drag it to a block and just drag back onto the drawing. That's extremely useful for modding lots of parts at the same time.

Interesting that John R uses a different method altogether, but that loses the D or 'snap' point if moved from the original.

The download site is somewhat misleading, but it can be d/l for free for hobbyist use. Although....as others have commented, quite how long it will remain 'free' is anyone's guess.
