Hi Michele,

I had a problem with worn ML7 apron bushes and bought a replacement set from here.

Thread: Midlands Model Engineering Exibition.
06/10/2012 21:19:48

The Midlands show is very good. Good access and parking etc. and it's not very far from the M40.

I have been going for several years, and as Terry says, the weather has always been exceptional.... until now as I think I may have just put the curse on it !

The only other comment I will make is that unlike Harrogate, the smaller traders appear to keep away as I have been told that the charges for exibitors are rather on the high side.

Thread: Chip Tray for Myford Super 7
01/09/2012 19:01:36

Greetings Bob,

A friend at work gave me a piece of butyl rubber left over from his new fish pond liner. I cut it to size and clamped it with a length of 10mm aluminium angle to the saddle against the left hand side of the cross slide on my ML7 using the tapped hole for the travelling steady.

With the saddle in the position shown in Chris J's photo the rubber just overhangs the shears at the chuck end. It is very strong and pliable and extends forward to just cover the leadscrew. When the saddle gets close to the chuck, it is heavy and soft enough to drop into the bed gap.

So far, after nearly 3 years of abuse from oils and hot swarf, it is slightly wrinkled but still doing the job of keeping the shears clean.

Thread: Restoring - Polishing levers, handwheels & slides etc

Mike

I have used Garryflex blocks for cleaning/polishing metal. Available in 4 grades from 36 to 240 grit, I got mine from Squires Tools (No connection. Other suppliers are out there)

Greetings Mick,

You could maybe take a look at this place. Not used them myself, but they appear to have a good range of products.

Thread: myford ml7
05/06/2012 19:35:57

Greetings Brian,

Here is a link to one the Myford ML7 spares pages.

http://www.myford.co.uk/acatalog/Myford_ML7_Motorising_Assembly.html

Unfortunately the motor mounting bolts do not appear to be listed. Therefore may I suggest that you measure the width of the slots in the motor mounting plate and the mounting slots or holes in the motor and use a bolt diameter that will fit the smaller of these. The length only needs to be sufficient to fit the thickness of a nut plus washers if required. The thread type doesn't really matter, just use the largest diameter that will fit and you should be fine.

Like V8Eng, I have very limited access the the back of my ML7 to take measurements.

Thread: Boiler and Metal Theft.
23/05/2012 20:44:22

The authorities in the UK can introduce whatever laws they think fit to clamp down on "dodgy" scrap dealers, but I am convinced that, as Ian SC suggests, a lot of stolen items including metal is being shipped directly out of the country without involving any scrap yards.

My local steam railway the Severn Valley had their boiler shop stripped of about £20k worth of copper a couple of years ago. I can't see that amount turning up at the local "scrappie" without alarm bells ringing, and I have not heard of it being recovered elsewhere. Sadly there is no alternative to metal for boilers whether full scale or model, and the "tea leaves" know this only too well !

There is no easy solution to this problem.

Thread: Myford ML7 questions
18/03/2012 16:27:04

Hi Peter,

You obviously have been given some very sound advice so far, but if you are new to the ML7, I trust that you are aware of the need for correct lubrication, particularly the headstock spindle.

Apologies if I am trying to preach to the converted.

Gordon.

Thread: Myford Inspection Guide

Thanks to Les for the advice and Joe for the link to a guide that appears far superior to the one I have.

Hi Dennis,

I have a copy of the Inspection Guide, but please can someone out there explain how to attach a pdf to a personal message as used on this forum?

Thanks in anticipation,
Gordon.
Thread: More chat about sheds
05/02/2012 14:23:41
I built my shed/workshop over 20 years ago in a restricted space and could only manage approximately 10 feet X 6 feet.
As my collection of equipment and tools etc has grown over the years, I really wish that it was 10 feet by 8 feet minimum!
With a substantial workbench holding a vice and a flypress, plus a Myford ml7 on stand, Fobco drilling machine, hand powered shaping machine and hobby-type double ended tool grinder on their own stands, plus the usual tool boxes and cabinets, space for metal stock, plus DIY and gardening equipment including lawnmower, it is a health and safety nightmare!
I would therefore advise anyone planning a workshop to consider the largest size that can be accomodated or afforded.

Gordon.
Thread: Mill bed re-grind

Hi nic,

You could try: http://www.slidewayservices.co.uk/ (Situated in Nuneaton)

Not used them myself. May be a bit too far north for you, but good access via M1/M6.

Has anyone else out there used them?

Thread: Miniature gas torches
06/07/2011 23:32:46
Hi Tony,

I use a cook's blowtorch for soldering jobs that require a bit of localised heat. It was meant to be used to caramelise the top of creme brulees and the like. Gives a narrow flame that can be finely controlled.
One of my pals has silver soldered small items with his.

I got mine from a well known low cost German supermarket, but they are available on the interweb. One site advertises them as a "Mini chef's blowtorch with automatic ignition".

Apparently not much use to average or large sized chefs though!

There is quite a range of models available on the web. May be cheaper and just as effective than the one you mentioned in your original post. Yer pays yer money and yer makes yer choice.

Regards,
Gordon.

Thread: Myford ML7 travelling steady 'fingers' size
17/05/2011 22:28:57
Greetings Martin,

If you would like a better colour match with a relatively tough finish, Plastikote medium grey aerosol paint available from DIY and hardware stores is even closer to Myford grey than Nissan dark blue!

Thread: Facing Cuts - Requires the Carriage to be Locked?
05/05/2011 16:14:44
Greetings All.

On the subject of a carriage locking lever, if you are not confident enough (like me) to produce a neat little handle like NJH that will lock in just the right position; a small indexable handle from somewhere like Arceurotrade will probably be suitable.
If the handle, when locked is in the way, it can be lifted and moved to a better position without releasing the lock.

Thread: Cutting fluids
25/04/2011 18:45:17
I also use Hallett Biokool14 @ 5% dilution and do not find the smell objectionable.
BTW I read somewhere that a way to prevent mould growth is to use a small air pump and stone as used in aquariums. It was alleged that bubbling air through the cutting oil mixture at regular intervals helped to prevent the fluid from "going off".
Does anyone else know of this?

Thread: Safety Shoes
25/04/2011 18:35:08
I bought a pair of trainer style safety shoes from Aldi some years ago. Bought originally for work to replace the the crippling steel capped shoes supplied by my employer , they ticked all the right safety standards boxes, including reinforced instep. They have padded interior and are very comfortable, cost about £15 at the time. I always wear them in the shed/workshop and for gardening and DIY. I don't know what Aldi's latest offerings are like, but I just can't wear these things out!
