Thread: What did you do today? 2023 |
06/07/2023 19:14:16 |
Hi, changed my satellite dish for a new one so I could get the benefit of my new Freesat recordable box. However, I haven't got the new cable into the house yet, so I've temporally fixed my old one in a different location on the same side of the house, but it's a bit lower down, but no drilling of holes was needed. Don't use these 12" G clamps very often these days, but they are really useful sometimes. Regards Nick. |
Thread: Soluble cutting oil just floating on water |
06/07/2023 08:43:28 |
Hi, like Martin, all the soluble cutting oils I've ever used in my day jobs, are put into a container and then the water was added, and in the machines that I've used, you would put about 500 ml of soluble oil it a standard size bucket, and then fill the bucket with water under a tap or with a hose, which would mix it to a milky looking solution. Sometimes though, if the barrel of soluble oil had been open for a good while, you would get some streaking on the top, where not all of the oil would mix. Regards Nick. |

Try to get an old Smiths electric (240v). Mine ( a wedding present!) is over 45 years old - never missed a beat, nor has it lost or gained any time. It must be very over-engineered. Hi John, doubt it is over engineered, the old mains clocks keep their time by the mains frequency, and a small difference or variation of voltage will make no difference to the time keeping. If you run it on 60Hz instead of 50Hz, it would run fast, but if it's a 60Hz one and you run it on 50Hz, it would run slow. Regards Nick. |

Hi, or you can just delete it like I have. Regards Nick. |
Thread: Repair a small cast bell |
03/07/2023 15:40:31 |
Hi, you could re-cast it, but you would have to add more metal to the melt, oh! but you'd be adding more metal anyway if it's brazed. I agree with others, and I would glue it. Regards Nick. |
Thread: Is this a scam? |
03/07/2023 14:58:04 |
Hi Chris, bills aside, but if they were going to take court proceedings against you, they are more likely to send you a letter, through the post, and you may well have to sign for it. Regards Nick. |
03/07/2023 11:08:49 |
Hi Bazyle, I'd guess the first thing it would do would be to acknowledge that your phone number is in current use, which may lead to your number being sold to other scammers. I would just delete it. HMRC is more likely to send you a letter. Regards Nick. Edited By Nicholas Farr on 03/07/2023 11:10:40 |
Thread: windows file explorer question |
01/07/2023 23:01:43 |
Hi Gerry, quite a while ago now, but I had a time when I had saved things, but when I went to look for them in the place where I thought I'd saved them, they were nowhere obvious to be found. I can't remember how I discovered it, but it turned out that everything was defaulting to be saved in OneDrive, no idea why that happened, and I can't remember what I did to stop it happening, but I did cure the problem. Regards Nick. |
Thread: How to remove this pulley? |
01/07/2023 17:48:27 |
Hi, I agree with Nigel B. about heating it while you've got your puller tight, even if you use a good hot air gun. Been there and done it a few times. Regards Nick. |

Thread: Sensitive Drills - Help with Identity and other Questions |
01/07/2023 13:55:40 |
Hi, this is my father's one that he had in his shed back in the 1940's. This is how it looked when I refurbished it, and mounted it with an electric motor, making it all one unit, which can be moved anywhere it's needed. I still use it at times for light drilling work. This is a Bonds Maximus drilling machine from around 1930/40. Regards Nick. |
01/07/2023 13:26:51 |
Hi Steve, I guess the belts are like that, because either the motor could not be reversed, or whoever assemble it, didn't know how the reverse it, or they just didn't know how it should be arranged. Regards Nick. Edited By Nicholas Farr on 01/07/2023 13:39:22 |

Hi Steve, that weird flat pulley array you mentioned, was common in industry where many machines were driven by line shafting. In the one in the photos, the flat belt would be between the two prongs, and one of the two pulleys would be a free wheeling one, so when the operator wanted to stop his machine, the belt would be shifted onto the free wheeling one with those prongs. In this way, each machine could be started and stopped individually without stopping the line shafting, which would be driven by just one motor or an engine. Regards Nick. Hi, I prefer the hydraulic pullers myself Machine Mart but I do have a set like Machine Mart 2 and the split bearing / pulley piece could be made easily enough for this set. Regards Nick. |

Hi Circlip, he says there were two set screws and one in in the end with a washer below his photo. I don't think there is a tapered bush, what you see is shiny parts where the washer has had good contact, the black bits look like old grease to me. Regards Nick. |

Hi Chris, if they are in complete volumes, sell them in complete volumes. Selling them in odd issues may take a long while and will probably leave you with loads of them that you may never sell. If you try and sell them as a job lot, you may also never sell them. The earlier ones are normally harder to find, but pricing can be difficult. You could try a commercial outlet to sell them to, but you won't get the same value from them that you would from a collector. The best thing on the likes of ebay, is to put them in the "bidding" rather than a "but it now" but put them in at a lowish price, as they will only fetch what someone is willing to pay. Regards Nick. |
Thread: NEWSFLASH |

Hi, as far as shared lines are concerned, they were still being issued in 1974 as that is when my parents first had a telephone installed, and it was not upgraded to a single line until about some time in1977, and yes, occasionally you could go to make a call, only to hear that the other party was using their phone so you would have to try later. But you still got crossed lines sometimes, I don't mean with the other party, but you maybe already on the phone to someone, and then suddenly you would hear two other people talking in the background which sounded like they were a long distance away, if it was the other party, you could hear them as clear as a normal phone call. I doubt that anyone would tolerate a shared line now, but back then you either accepted it, or you didn't get a phone, and of course you got a bog standard phone as well. I think when Trim phones first came out, you had to pay a little extra on your line rental if you wanted one. Regards Nick. |
Thread: Washer size! |
29/06/2023 12:55:03 |
Hi Margaret, washer sizes are normally designated by their ID and I doubt you'll find any advertised as 13.5mm, if you mean ID, then a 1/2" one might be about the right size, but you may just have to file it to fit. Regards Nick. |
