Thread: thread of a record 36 vice |
05/11/2013 17:23:35 |
I have a record No 5 vice of some considerable vintage. The screws that hold the jaws are 5/16 BSW by 1 inch total length, countersunk. I got my replacements from EmKay Screw Supplies (WWW.emkaysupplies.co.uk) at a very reasonable cost and quick delivery. I bought the 1 1/4 long screws and cut them down.

I use bifocal safety glasses available from the likes of Amazon - do a search for 'Bifocal Safety Glasses'. I find them very good and not too pricey. John Edited as URL did not condense to 'Link'

Thread: Arc Euro Trade ML7 cross slide leadscrew modification |
08/10/2013 17:42:30 |
DMB, Mine was a S7 power cross feed. There was some extra work required to clear the auto disengage stop. I don't know how much further John got with it. I don't know about the regular S7. Having said that, are the ML7 and non -PXF Super 7 cross slide screws the same? If so the could the ML7 mod be made to fit? And having said THAT, I realise the ML7 and S7 cross slide brackets are not the same - different depth of cut indicators for one thing. Rgds, John Edited to add last sentence after engaging brain! I was lucky enough to have my Super 7 modded by a certain Mr Stevenson while he was researching the same job for the Super 7. It has been in use for a few years now and is just as good as the day it was done. I would highly recommend the mod. Rgds, John |
Thread: 'Quick' Cut Knurling Tool |
24/07/2013 15:26:27 |
Thanks all for the replies and suggestions. I bought a pair of wheels as suggestied by John S, made a couple of 16 mm bushes and the job is a good 'un! I also found some wheels with an 8 mm bore but have yet to try these.

I have acquired a 'Quick' cut knurling tool and wonder if anyone has used one of these and can help out with any information on use and adjustment. I have stripped and cleaned the tool which seems to work fine, although I am not sure i have the worm gears controlling the movement of the wheels set up correctly. If these a way of ensuring these are in the right mesh?
Also, what is the purpose of the 2 countersunk dog point screws arrowed in the picture? They align with rebates in the wheel spindles but appear too short to do anything. I asssume the allen screw arrowed below is a clamp for locking the wheel spindles. Does it have any other purpose? As I have the wheels set, there is no clearance for long pieces, although the scalloped form of the tool would suggest that these should be accomodated. Should the tool cope with knurling longer pieces than the gap between the wheels and the body? Many thanks for any answers, Rgds, John |

Thank you for the new Pocketmags access to ME - this is what many on here have been requesting for some time, so well done! May we assume a similar service for MEW to follow? Rgds, John |
Thread: Untrue 4 jaw chuck ? |
04/07/2013 11:35:38 |
HI Dave, Try a search for 'D1 backplate fitting'. There appear to be some differences of opinion on how the two tapers engage. Personally I think that the taper should allow the two flat mating surfaces to touch firmly - there is not enough length in the taper to seat the chuck properly. Can you get a feeler or shim between the two faces? If so, is this consistent all round? If there is a gap that is not consistent this may be your problem. Rgds, John |

Thanks all for the replies. I can read the digital issues through the Digital Issues portal on this page - I was wondering about Newstand on iPad and the Pocketmags app. Thanks again, John |

Hi Ron, John Stevenson does a pair of gears that will let you cut most metric threads with your gearbox. He sells them here: **LINK** but it appears they are out of stock at present. The gears come with a chart to tell you what pitch you are cutting. John |

I'm with chris S on this - get or make a tangential holder. If you want to buy one don't be put off by the price - you could easily pay more in inserts for index tools! A well know supplier with a UK outlet no longer advertises on this site, but can be found on Harold Hall's 'Model Engineering Website' . Their advert is not placed centrally. Rgds, John |
