I phoned peter (Peatol) last week and ordered quite a bit of stuff, just waiting for it to arrive.

Thread: Wallaby crankshaft

Jason, thanks for the info but £25 for 6 inches is a bit rich for me!

11/01/2021 16:24:06

Unfortunately googling those bs numbers brings up zilch

Have reached the point where the crankshaft is next but not sure of best material to use, machinability, wear etc. American builders seem to favour 1144 stressproof steel but am having difficulty finding a European equivalent. Any help will be gratefully received.

Thread: Peatol Lathe
02/01/2021 09:46:20

Hello Nick, I also have one and use it regularly it is much modified with epycyclic saddle travel ,dro’s and Dti’s. I have also made a tailstock turret ( Stevenson Trophy 3rd place) which makes multiple small parts a doddle. If you need any photos pm me.

Looking at your video and the mismatched colours of your lathe I would suspect mismatched / worn parts that have been used to build it, possibly a bent clutch shaft as mentioned earlier. If you made your location known maybe somebody local to you could help?

Thread: Improved performance over standard V belts?
31/12/2020 22:38:29

I have had a nut t link belt on my S7 for nearly 20 years with no trouble or vibration which is more than can be said for a std v belt which if left for a short time gets a set in it which gives you the vibrations.

Have to say that John and Clive’s are just the same as mine and it worked very well and as they say not difficult to make.

I have recently bought 1 mm sets from Pryor and use them in a jig and they are all perfectly aligned. When I bought them I asked about alignment and they assured me they were perfect and they were.

Thread: Toolpost grinder for ML7
11/12/2020 22:53:30

Martin, you admit it will be the odd job so why would you buy a commercial tool post grinder for £xxx when as people have said before it can be done another way. Myself I use a circular mag chuck and a dremel or my tool post miller with a wheel attached. I use it for grinding gear blanks and washers and with the measuring gear that I have I cannot find any runout on thickness. just make sure to protect your lathe. Also see mew article on grinding chuck jaws, informative and it works!

Sorry Andrew but if you are using a 5.3 mm drill for m6 tapping I would hate to see your percentage of engagement figures!

Mark, From my original request for info in April 2019 I decided to go the Ben Fleming route but have to admit that I have not achieved very much, just collected a few components and done a little on the hardware so perhaps I’d better join that club!

The first one is my own design and the second is from an image from the net. Both work really well and making them fit close to the machine spindle saving even more space
