Material

1221 forum posts 161 photos | Have reached the point where the crankshaft is next but not sure of best material to use, machinability, wear etc. American builders seem to favour 1144 stressproof steel but am having difficulty finding a European equivalent. Any help will be gratefully received. |

Leave the "BS" off the other numbers and you will get plenty of results or use EN prefix instead

![]() 244 forum posts 105 photos | The first question I would ask is what are you going to do with the engine? If it is going to idle for a few hours a year at a show mild steel will be fine. If you are going to haul passengers with it in an 1831 every other weekend then you will need to use something better. |

Jason, thanks for the info but £25 for 6 inches is a bit rich for me! Don't know where you went looking but 50mm dia x 200lg black EN8 comes up at £12.33 inc postage from the e-bay supplier as that is smallest dia he does, about a tenner if you contact them and ask for 150mm long. Or M-machine do 1 1/4" bright EN8 which I think you can just get it out of for £6.90 x 300lg plus about £5 postage. Edited By JasonB on 13/01/2021 14:46:46 |

Unfortunately googling those bs numbers brings up zilch 'Equivalents for AISI 1144 are BS44SMn28, BS44SMnPb28, and BS226M44.' They're BS designations, but BS isn't part of the number. Try 44SMn28, 44SMnPb28 and 226M44 Dave |
