Thread: Bernard Towers' Lantern Chuck |
24/04/2021 18:58:26 |
drawing in issue 303 has a mistake . the dimension for screw cutting the internal thread on the lantern screw should read 0.710 screwcut 32TPI. to be a close fit on thread on body. Hope neil sees this as it needs to be noted in the mag. Edited By bernard towers on 24/04/2021 19:23:02 |
Thread: Snapping taps |
21/04/2021 23:25:10 |
I’m with Rod spiral point or spiral flute both types have front geometry that is different to conventional 1 2. 3 taps. The angles at the front of the tap are such that the cutting load is greatly reduced, that’s why industry uses them ( less breakages) |

Thread: Pins for a knurling tool - how hard should they be? |

If you have the wheels make a clamp type tool , much more predictable/ repeatable and definitely kinder to your machine |
Thread: Milling machine thoughts? |
06/04/2021 22:50:31 |
As I cannot tilt my millhead so therefore tilt my work I would think must be easier when you think of the number of times you use the mill in standard mode compared to tilted, then with the added complication of tramming to set it back to vertical. |

Not absolutely sure but think it might be EN8 but might be an idea to contact a hydraulic company which could give you contacts to manufacturers. |

Thread: Small Poppet Valves |

When I turn parts with small stems I first turn to the head size then turn the stem in one cut with cutting oil and very fine feed. I have done this successfully from a 3/16 blank down to 0.025” and made 100 of them. Leaving the blank a reasonably large size gives you the support. |
Thread: Pressure Turning |
24/03/2021 18:45:02 |
Yes I have done this in the past but your blanks need to be close to size as depth of cut has to be quite small but yes it does work |
Thread: Which lathe to purchase |
24/03/2021 17:38:59 |
Howard, Please don’t tell people that you can do small work on a big lathe, you obviously haven’t tried sub 1 mm holes on a 21” DSG,! “ |
