Clockmakers still blue their screws the same way as always by heating the screws whilst laying in a bed of brass swarf ( heated underneath) until they turn blue then quench in oil. Alternatively you can black your parts chemically, just google blackit solution. |
Thread: Coventry Die Head |
27/03/2023 20:50:13 |
Usually if its a 1/2' head that's the max size thread dia, although in later years oversize sets were available. |

Best of luck Chris your problems are only just starting, wait till you start collecting die sets,I hate to think how much I spent. Good thing to make for them is the internal stop which is a must when making batches of Bolt/Screws. I have just made a batch of 5mm sq headed bolts and they were threaded at 300rpm and the head clicks off at the came place every time,Magic. Thoroughly recommend the book Rob mentioned. Thread: Rear tool post vs front tool post |
23/03/2023 10:46:42 |
Taig toolpost dimensions are, front 1” sq and 1” from base to bottom. Of tool slot, tool slot 0.375” wide total height 1.750”. Rear toolpost is 1” sq, 1.236” from base to bottom of slot, 0.375” for slot withe total height of 2.00”. They also do a rear toolpost for parting off which is made from steel (the others from hard anodised aluminium) The parting version is much beefier and has the slot at an angle a la GHT and I find it works very well, I also use a small QCTP on one of my machines |

Thread: Headband magnifier - blessed relief! |
20/03/2023 11:49:38 |
Hi Kiwi Bloke yes I have a set of those, got them from a RAF Tech about 30 years ago. Mine are bakelite and the headband is now replaced with a Halcyon goggles headband, the fore head piece is not covered the bakelite goes straight to your forehead. I do now use an Optivisor and it's difficult to tell the difference in optical quality it's just that the comfort is better with the Optivisor. I do occasionally walk past the building where they were made as I am a Norfolk Boy. |
Thread: Warco V Belt Change |
17/03/2023 12:03:37 |
You would have thought that the idler pulley was the one to move but the pulleys all look as if they are in a straight line which means moving the motor, or could it possibly be that at sometime in its history it has had shorter belts fitted? |
