As suggested use the walls for storage, and if you can make them with draws to suit your needs. Better to have enclosed units as it is surprising where the swarf gets. Yes I know as I have some shelves which I need to clear off the tools to clean it off.

I like the bisley draw units especially the shallow ones for the smaller stuff as having to dig into deep draws to find something is a pain

I am not the person to correct peoples spelling or how they do things like on u tube. I do however get a little upset at people who do pull up people for getting things wrong or in their eyes see someone doing something on U tube wrong or the long away around.

If these people can do better why not do the job in the first place. I don't see those that pull up people doing write ups or even videos. Is it because they know that they could not do better or just armchair machinists

Spent most of the day Gardening yet again getting very close to all the major planting done.

Then managed a spell in the workshop first job complete a box repair which I picked up at a local show. I paid £3.00 for the box and Moore and wright 2-3" micrometer well worth it as I needed spares for another one which had the locking piece missing. The box was not in a good shape broken lid and some warpping of the lid.

A little time and some spray ebonising spray made it usable again all be it for a different Micrometer.

Then it was onto the backplate for an ER32 collet chuck which I need to replace. Completed the turning to fit the lathe and drilled and tapped for the mounting studs. No pictures at this stage.

At least I managed to get some workshop time

Section 10 of the 1971 Coinage Act makes doing this with UK coins illegal.

Simple go to an exchange and buy Brazilian coins and use them

Still have two more vegetables to plant out but rain stopped that so a good excuse to get into the workshop and do some work, but before I restart work on the Rob Roy and the Farm Boy engine I need to complete the backplate replacement for the ER32 collet chuck.

Faced off the back which will fit the register on the lathe and started machining out the register. I am within a few thou now hopefully will complete that side before drilling out the mounting holes for the three studs.

I can then mount it and start to machine the collet chuck side

Is it daft to suggest making the section with the hole as 2 milled parts and silver soldering together? Obviously depends on the amount of meat each side.

I ordered some items over the weekend and two of the orders arrived this morning via royal mail these were confirmed as only being sent yesterday as Monday was a bankholiday.

This did surprise me knowing what they are like what did not surprise me was a letter for a street dow the road which we often get

Went and collected some guttering for the workshop, this will serve two purposes one I will not get soaking when entering the workshop as the water runs off the roof and secondly it will enable me to have yet another waterbutt filled up for the summer.

So bar having any rain tomorrow that is one job for me to complete. This is the closest I have managed to get to the workshop recently as a lot of time spent gardening mostly the veg patch.

Soon be able to get some machines fired up and make some swarf

Not sure where this belongs so put in the Tea Room a little humour especially for the CNC nuts

A little boy goes to his father and asks, “Daddy, how was I born?”
The father answers,
“Well, son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway! Your mom and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your mom and we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, and googled each other. There your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared that said: 'You've got male!'”

Thread: Router bit

I've done it several times. The only thing you have to watch is that if you are working into an internal corner then the generally larger diameter of a router bit won't get into the corner as far.

Diameter of cutter also determines speed so a router bit would generally need to run slower than the smaller dia of your typical milling cutter but a sit is aluminium you should be able to give it some beans.

Part of what needs cutting I will need to stop short anyway and finish those by hand and blend them in

Thanks Dalboy, I am belt & braces and my skill with gessing sticks in restricted space and internal diameters is poor.

I like to get measure three times, one independant before cutting.

There seems to be a reluctance to discuss and share actual dimensions. Do you know why?

If there are any discrepancies in measurement from lathe to lathe then using someone else's measurement may lead to an incorrectly fitting part that is why it is best to take them directly from the machine in question.

Hope that explains it

Start by doing some small pieces and you will be surprised at how that will get you up and running again. My main problem is that I have other interests like gardening and woodwork and at the moment been spending more time getting the veg patch planted and flower beds sorted for all the plants I have raised from seed.

Thank you Dalboy, I see from your classic work bench you have lots of experience!

I see you measured it. What was the register measure (5x.xxmm)?

The workbench is scarred from many years of woodworking must replace the top as it is ply.

I took my measurements from the lathe register and also the chuck sizes if you do that then you should get it correct size

Thank you Guys. At the moment this is the only job I need it for

06/05/2023 11:14:43

I am thinking ahead as much as I can. Just put an order in for some cutters for the Farm boy as well as one for the rob roy later on. (they did not have the size I wanted)

With the farm boy I need to round over some of the edges on the Ali parts of the build, would it be possible to use a wood router bit for this operation I have some HSS ones as well as TCT tipped ones.

If this is possible it will save having to order from a different company yet again.

It just seems as when ordering bits and pieces I have to order from many different companies instead of ordering from just one.

I know Arceuro have a metric cutter which would do the job so if push comes to shove I will order that one but that will be yet another postage cost just for a small item. I do try to reduce postage and bulk things together.

My first one I made from Ali and I am remaking it is steel as well as making it a little thicker.

On my WM280v there is a mark which is there so that the three jaw chuck is fitted in the same orientation each time so on the backplate I did the same which brings it very close to the same settings. The PCD on this is as Jason's 75mm.

I turned the face which attaches to the spindle first and then attached it to the lathe before turning the outer face which attaches to the ER collet chuck(like you this is ER32).

In this last photo I have rough turned the blank ready to do the same turning as I did for the Ali one. I am a total novice and I am sure that if I can do it then you should be able to do the same. I know there will be some that say I did it wrong but I got the first one working just fine and it ran concentric when fitted each time (yes I did measure it)
