Thread: Wood in small (or large) amounts
18/07/2019 17:45:13

Lime is certainly a great wood for carving I have carved a few pieces.

Sycamore and maple woods are pretty good paler coloured woods as is beech which can be hard

As Martin Kyte stated woodturning supplies for box wood as for Lignum Vitae if only very short pieces are required IE less than 4" then look for old bowls balls and cut them up they can be expensive you can pay £10 upwards for one in some places. I am fortunate in that I managed to pick up 18 for nothing.

Just need to apply a sealing finish to the oak. I thought perhaps briwax applied with wire wool.

Geoff

I know a couple of days late but I turned this yesterday to only find a couple of nails in it and as you can see the black area is what they have caused. The wood for this is Ash had it been Oak the effect would have been a lot worse as it contains a lot of tannin which reacts with metal.

To give another example if I want to turn Oak black I take wire wool and let it steep in vinegar for a while and when rubbed on the Oak will turn it instantly black, so avoid rubbing it with wire wool

As for using Oak on a nicely made scale model the grain is of the open type and can look wrong on a small scaled model, personally I would have used a closer grained wood for appearances and then stain it Oak coloured.

Thread: Do you clean your workshop at the end of the day?
28/06/2019 22:14:51

I leave cleaning up until the next day before work starts I find that on colder days the vac and me cleaning makes it warmer to work for that session.

Thread: Suitable wood for making tool holders

Avoid all woods that hvea lot of tanin in them as stated above a good quality py wood will be ideal. Beech is a good one as well

Thread: Ebay 'photos'

One of my things that get me is when something is advertised under so many different heading. One example is carving tools for woodwork they insist on putting them under the heading of turning tools as well.

There are so many things wrong in the advertising on there just so they can get a sale even if it means selling to someone who is new to a bobby and does not know better for example X tool when used for Y application is dangerous but still advertise it under the Y heading

HDPE can be found everywhere about you and can be molded to shape, just don't use the house oven to do it. Woodworkers have made carving mallets from plastic milk bottle tops and even pens which can be turned

Thread: Connecting a pair of motor controllers.
03/06/2019 19:21:58

Looking at this from a different point of view will both motors always be running the same rotation if so will one of the controller and potentiometer be able to run both motors. So two motors and only one controller and potentiometer.

I use to wire two motors to one controller in model boats when only had a two channel set

Thread: Small air compressor sufficient to run a Potty Mill
01/06/2019 08:57:22

You will find that most compressors(not all) will deliver 100psi but can be reduced using the regulator.

I personally would look for one that has a reservoir if you are looking for something quite how about something like the compressors for air brushing, depending on what is needed.

Thread: Use a router for a mortice lock
31/05/2019 20:13:18

I would as already suggested put a board either side to give a firmer base to work from. Again as already mentioned depth of cut can be a problem and the size of router needed to run a bit that is capable of routing to any depth.

Drilling out the bulk of waste will help and ease some of the load on the bit. A double fence is a good way to prevent any accidents of cutting away any wood that is not needed to be cut. Don't try to take too much of a cut the same as you would if milling,

If drilled out the amount that needs to be removed is just as easily done with a sharp chisel

Some of these are what you need, they will reflect heat back at the job

On a little bit of a side track from my first post is the company that you linked to. Are they also a good place to buy silver solder from or do you get it from somewhere else.

Thread: Oh Dear, I've blown the chop saw...
22/05/2019 19:22:07

First question is where did the smoke come from there is a good reason for asking. Is it direct from where the brushes are or somewhere near the cable entry. If the cable entry then the cable may need chopping back and rewired.

If not there then take a look inside to see if any swarf has short circuited any of the internals while in there check for any broken wires

Thread: Adhesive Storage?
18/05/2019 11:59:06

I have only every stored CA glue in the fridge well labeled. All other glues I use I don't have any problems with which include PVA Polyester type glues and resins. The other Glue I use is not a problem a it is a powdered for which needs mixing with water but still needs to be in an airtight container.

Eberhardt I know what you mean as when I mixed to much resin activator when casting some blanks to be turned.

I got the mix wrong and put too much in and the amount of heat was unbelievable luckily I let it set undercover outside and not in the house, and this is done not only for this but also polyester resin does smell quite a bit unlike Aluminite two part resin

No problem with grip I make them from wood and resin as well the resin I also make with a smooth finish and again no problem with gripping them.

I did think of adding a knurled area but went against it

This one sits nicely in the hand and just a nice weight

Hope this is OK to post this.

Today spent turning Ali not sure of what grade. The end result was this pen I did this with hand tools as in the second photo mainly the top tool for the main shaping certainly a learning curve but found the best angle of attack in the end.

Once turned I used 600grit to give the brushed effect I was originally going for the full polished look but glad I did not. The gold parts are from a kit

Rennaissance Wax is only a protective finish mainly for wood. Extensively used by the british museums as a protector it also halp to keep fingerprints off of things that need to be protected and are handled.

And yes it does work I have used it on many occassions the stuff I got is expensive being over £10 for 65ml

It can be used on furniture, leather, paintings, metals, marble ivory and then some more
