Kevin it is usually very easy to alter the connections in the motor terminal box, to reconnect the motor from 415 volt STAR to 240 volt DELTA. Please send a picture of the terminal box with the lid off and then I/we can put you in the picture. It is not so difficult to alter the motor internally, but it will need dismantling completely. In the past some on posted a some excellent picture on 'HERE' showing how he carried out the conversion, might be worth a look.

I met a friend for the first time in 12 months on Tuesday morning, and he showed me an inverter which he recently bought via ebay for £45 and it came from London. Frequently there are discussion on this site regarding the quality of inverters from China, I've asked several times, has any one actually seen or know of a faulty one, up to date no reply. I just like to see fair play, and no link to PRC either. John

In September 1980 issue of ETI magazine there was an article on an electronic speed controller for an electric drill using a Triac. I think this would do the job for you. I'm trying to help a friend, who has an Exel PVM 10V vertical, bench top milling machine, the speed controller has failed. On the back of the pcb it says DM76334 and also has a letter W within a surround. Does any one recognise the board and have they a circuit diagram. I have already checked the two Thyristors and both are OK. John

My 84 year old wife and I, have changed all our wall mounted radiators (8) during the lock down. Unfortunately the mounting bracket centres were slightly different. Our house will soon be 100years old so no plaster board walls to contend with. We just had one bit of soldering to do, the wife soon got that done. Those extension tails are a good idea and you can get them on sale or return. John

Has any one actually had a Chinese inverter of dubious quality. I often read on HERE, a lot of derogative comment regarding Chinese made inverters, but, when I ask friends who have got Chinese made inverters, all say they work as expected and are very happy with their purchases. 20/25 or more years ago I fortunate as I able to buy some pre own inverters at knock down price, so no axe to grind. As so many car components are made in PRC or India are they also of dubious quality, I wonder. John

I have a Naerok drill / mill ( made in Korea and is Korean in reverse), the spindle pulley is on a taper, it needs warming up to expand before it will release off the taper. I used a hot air gun for maybe ten minutes, then very carefully used a three leg puller. The so called Chinese crap by some, is light years better than my Naerok drill / mill, I'm never the less happy with what I have got. John

I shaped a length of wood and already had a length of sheet steel in which I drilled the screw holes, and then mounted my tool holders horizontally behind the lathe. Years ago when Model Engineering at the "tec" we set up jigs (also home brewed) and made a lot of holders. John

Never seen a capacitor start capacitor run motor with a change over switch. On the ones I've worked on, on start up both caps are in parallel and in series with the start winding. When up to about 75% of max speed the centrifugal switch which on start up was closed, now OPENS, leaving the smaller value capacitor in circuit with the start winding. and in parallel with the run winding. Keith, your 120/150 is the start capacitor (with a short time rating) and the the 10 is the run one. I'll read more tomorrow, . John

I've never seen a Stuart Dynamo, but if the brushes are angled no as they would chip off the leading edge in reverse. If they are straight, I can't so a problem other than the polarity of the terminals. John

Hello Pete, should you decide to buy a Huanyang. inverter as several of my friend have done with 100% satisfaction, I can send you a copy of the program which you may need, nothing at all complicated. Also, almost all STAR connected motors can be altered to DELTA some may need to be taken apart, again I have details should you ned them. Not pole changing though. John

I had a gear wheel with a broken tooth, my friend a coded welder brazed the tooth back in place, that was several years ago and it still going strong. Perhaps a plate bolted threw, below might be an alterative. John

I silver solder my 6 x 4 band saw blades. I chamfer the two ends using my belt sander, I made a simple jig to hold each ends, one at a time, getting both the chamfer to the same angle. Then using another little jig ( a piece of angle iron this time) to hold both ends together, I apply the flux, heat things up and solder. A easy quick job and, I mix and match bits to make another blade, now have more than eight. Rarely do I get a broken one, worn out yes. Wouldn't be without the bandsaw, there was an article some where on making a larger table for ripping lengths of wood John

Several years ago I fixed a Bridgeport and the control box is lower right hand side and I think the transformer is in there as well as the PCB. You will need as similar size transformer to what is in there at present 240 volt input 115 out run via 13 amp socket or via a contactor. Unfortunately I don't know the rating of the transformer, but have a look at RS or Farnell. The motor is a shunt wound 110 volt DC and the PCB controls the field. Should you need it, I have a circuit diagram and parts list for the PCB for this machine, but some one on HERE re- drew the diagram in a much more clear manner, perhaps they will read your request and will send you a copy. We have had 2 Skoda cars, the first was an early front engine job, good reliable car, easy to work on and cheap spare when required, after 4 trouble free years of motoring, we bought a second hand Felicia. The Felicia, took us to South of France 6 times. The last long trip was 4 weeks camping in Eastern Europe, via Belgium, Germany, Poland, Czech. The Skoda works is huge, they make machine tools as well VW Polo cars. We also visited Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and Coldiz on the way home. John

Well, when I made my spot welder several years ago, the shunt went out, as I though it provided an alterative path for some of the magnetic flux. I used two turns (I think) of plastic covered PYRO and used the OUTER as the conductor ignoring the inner. For the jaws I fortunately had a length of damaged earth rod. It worked OK on thin stuff, but I think a bigger transformer from an industrial. cooker would be much better. Anyway, space became a premium in the workshop, so out it went. As an alternative, if you need to join sheet steel panels together is to drill a hole in ONE piece and with your stick weld or Mig tack both together, through the hole. I've seen car restoration folk do this, and works well. john

Small hole or not, why not use one of the other spare stepper blocks underneath, then the system can be used as was intended.. John
