Thread: Mystery Lathe
02/08/2012 00:48:59

re the pic of the lathe, if you follow Stubbs advice above the picture comes out Ok on your monitor, agree a 'chunky' little lathe, the gap bed would be handy..cleaned up would be a good addition to any workshop..

Thread: Digital Issues

Hi People,

Thanks to Diane and her "techie" friend, all fixed. Who said the tech people at ME are not helpfull.

Very interesting as the "techie" knew what the obtuse MS message meant as follows...

"Probably at some point the “mydigitalmagazines” domain name was temporarily down/unavailable, and so his browser has cached (remembered) that fact and now won’t try and get there. I think you should ask him to empty his browser cache and try again, as 9 times out of 10 that will solve the problem."

Even followed that advice with a link to a help site explaining how to do it for FireFox, on the same site has advice on doing the same for IE.

Did as he sugested and walllaaa! all now works, perhaps I should say that very quietly in case Windows hears about it !!.

By the way the "default last message" thingy still does not work, many thanks to all who replied with advice on the problem, will just have to keep using the workaround sugested by Russ and Sid. Sorry Michael, your fix does not work for me.

I look forward very much to the new isues of ME and MEW, gets a bit stressfull when i can't see them. Top marks to the editing staff and the contributers as there is always something of interest in both mags.

Thanks All (will go to sleep now)

Hi Russ (also in Oz),

Unless i forget to I am always logged in to the site.

Yes that works for me too, but it is only a work around a function that does not work.

To my mind when you toggle "default last msg" ON then it should apply to all readings of forum msgs, especially the "most recent" listing on the front page, otherwise what is the use of it ??

Diane, any comment ??

To "Steambuff"

Hi Dave, re you msg "I get a different Web address to you ..."

OS is XP SP3 and browser is FireFox 12.0.....

whilst my browser comes up with the ERROR
"Firefox can't find the file at http://www.mydigitalmagazine.co.uk/de/7/1433/"
the address actually showing is
http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/members/digitaleditions/popup.asp?t=13&i=1433
so is it re-routing me from the ME site to the MyDigitalMagazine site to actually look at the magazine ??
is something wrong with the link ??

Hi everyone (and Diane),

While we are on problem solving, something that has bugged me for a while.

I can't get "Default to last message" to work in "My Account/Website Preferances", no matter how many times I change it and save again it keeps displaying 'first' message in any threads I go to, even in this thread I have to page to the end of the messages to find the current chat.

OH!! maybe "Default to last message" means something else entirely !!

Thanks Dave,

Actually just got an email from Diane with some sugestions, but 4430 and 4431 still dont work.

She sugested that the files do take her a long time to load up, so it occured to me that my system may be 'timing out' and displaying the usual stupid Microsoft message.

No idea what I can do about this, the previous issues load up OK (have just tested a few), so can only presume something is different with the two problem issues causing them to take longer to load up.

Any sugestions ??

Hi,

Re my previous msg, MEW digital editions seem to work OK

Hi Diane, David or anyone.

Why can't I access the digital editions of ME 4430 and the new 4431, the system comes up that it can't find the file.

"can't find the file at http://www.mydigitalmagazine.co.uk/de/7/1433/."

Is the msg from one of them.

Issues before this are fine and I was able to access 4430 but not now.

Have checked and my Subs are fine out to 2013

Have sent a msg to diane but no reply as yet.

Just had a thought, must check if MEW access is working.

Hi Stephen,

Think you may need the "paper" copies of those issues as they dont appear to be included in the "archive" issues, why is that ???

Thread: Angle Clamp
18/04/2012 22:23:14

Thanks Bob,

Yes just noticed the bolts holding the two plates together. Agree the whole thing a lot more stable with work "inside" the attachment. Will look at maybe milling the inside surface of my piece of angle iron so as to get 'straight" sufaces may need a long series mill cutter to get into the corners, if it does not look practicle then do have a couple of offcuts of steel plate that could be machined up in the same fashion as yours. With my small lathe and lill will take a while as only very light cuts possible, but I think it well worth the effort.

In the latest ME that is a neat little fixed steady used in one of the projects.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the photos of your "angle clamp" very interesting attachment. Very neat construction, I like the blind holes for the tensioning screw, stops the screw wandering all over the place when tightened.

I have made a couple of much smaller "finger plates" but problem is always how to secure it when you need to drill or machine whatever it is holding.

Still have not upgraded to the C1 but have a piece of heavy angle that would make a nice version of your project for the C0/C1, so as to get a nice flat surface might mount the "finger plate" parts to the outside of the angle after turning/milling both outer surfaces "straight" with respect of the drill/mill bed.

Great idea.

Thread: Search for an article in MEW

Hello Dias,

Sounds good, would be interested in trying it out.

Hi,

Yes this appears to work Ok, though I find the instructions a bit strange to follow, if you "click the red box" you close down the page. Can't see any other red box.

I just follow the resultant pages as I would a "normal" Google search

But this does not answer my original question of
" page 30 of MEW 160 mentions a facility on this site to search for an article in MEW."
as the above facility onlt searches the forums.

In hope

Hi, page 30 of MEW 160 mentions a facility on this site to search for an article in MEW, but darned if I can find it.

Could someone help please

What I am actually searching for is an item on construction of a compound slide with a base plate to fit a cross slide with T slots.

Thread: Lantern Chuck
28/03/2012 21:31:54

Hi Barry and Norman,

Thanks very much for your advice.

Norman the rotary table looks good.

You guys have hit on a very good idea, with suitable adjustments to scaling i could make a "common" base which will take the compound slide (still haven't found it), rotary table and ball turning jig. Someone else put up some pics of a good looking ball turner but looks like maybe a little complex when reduced in size for the C1 (but wil check it out anyway.

Would need to make up a spare base so can use the rotary table on the mill (Emco 3).

Anyway will keep in touch when I have the project to planning stage but lantern chuck is first as have a bunch of bolts to customize

26/03/2012 06:13:00

Thanks Barry,

That's a good way to make it

The square edges inside the "lantern" are what threw me. My gear is a little smaller than yours and I use ER type collects (Emco 3 and C0), so apart from a "normal" one might also knock up an "oversize" one to fit in the 3 jaw. Like you I often have to modify/make small bolts.

Am tradeing up to a C1 shortly to get "proper" screw cutting especially for internal threads. A few years ago i picked up a screw cutting jig for the Emco, but at the time not much use for it so traded it for some other attachments, am kicking myself now for not keeping it. There is only so much you can do with taps and dies. Only problem is the C1 does not come with a compound slide so will have to make one (parts are quite expensive by the time they get to Australia). Hopefully with the C1 I can cut LH threads otherwise do have LH taps/dies in 6 and 8mm.

There was a good project in a recent MEW for one, just have to find which issue now as think it would scale down to my machine quite well.

Then I want to build a little rotary table (not geared) for rounding off bits and pieces, then a ball turning jig. I particularly like the little turret like ones so that both convex and concave cuts can be made (looks so easy on uTube video). Might see if anyone has built such attachments for the small lathes.

Hello Saxalby,

Lovely job and as you say very handy, am interested in how you actually made the "lantern" part of the gadget.

Looks maybe that you cut a section form a "U" channel and brazed it to the body and finished off in the mill or by hand, then of course back in the lathe to drill the central hole for the adapters which insidentaly are a great idea.

Well!! am darned if I can find/see them, the two links come up with

"Error The article cannot be found."

and the direct link comes up with

"Search Results Articles 21 to 1 of 1" and the rest of the page is blank.

Could someone help me ??
