Thread: Rotary broaching |
04/07/2023 17:18:03 |
I gave up on my rotary broaching because a] I couldn't harden the broach to my satisfaction, b] a lot of axial force is required? and c] I wasn't convinced the cheapo broach holder was any good but I don't recall seeing any mention of a null point?? Tony |

We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, rotary broaching is a proven technique with decent tools. Tony |

Following with interest as I had a similar problem. Is the broach holder a decent make, mine was a Chinese offering and just didn't work? Tony |

When I wanted to upgrade from my Myford super 7 I lusted after all the usual subjects but ended up with a Warco 290V, a pile of c*** in places but once I replaced the rubbish change gears with an electronic leadscrew it's actually hard to beat, accurate and very quiet, the geared head Chinese offerings seem to be noisy??? Just my opinion. Tony |

Just use mild steel if you can get away with it, back in the day when we didn't buy everything from China vice handles were normally a one piece forging. Tony . Very interesting, Tony I am not doubting your word, but I’m intrigued to know how a one-piece forging would be fitted to the vice-screw. … was it somehow forged in-situ ? Don’t think I have ever seen one. MichaelG. Jeez Michael, are we not talking about a milling vice with removable handle, I had it in my head that we were? Recovering from a nasty bout of Covid so not 'with it' atm. Reading the OP yes it looks like a bench vice. Tony Edited By Tony Pratt 1 on 30/06/2023 14:30:26 |
Thread: Mini Lathe Ways Lapping |
30/06/2023 12:55:05 |
Posted by Russell Allsop on 30/06/2023 11:55:51:
Stripped the carriage of my VM210 mini lathe, re-assembled and shimmed the plates holding the carriage onto the ways. The carriage hits a high spot in the center of the ways, would lapping the ways with grinding paste be an option to level the ways to the carriage and is there a specific technique involved? Many thanks for your advise. Russell No Tony |

Cutwel [amongst others] do a range of milling cutters which should cut hardened HSS. Tony |
Thread: Do I need a J drill or what? |

Plastics tend to push away from drills so using a 7mm drill will produce a hole smaller than 7mm. Also agree with AJ about using larger drills in .1mm increments Tony

As the man said, "Buying anything from the UK is now a pain-in-the-arse " Sad to say,I found the same thing, just not worth the hassle . To be fair most of the 'stuff' we buy in the UK is from China, India etc etc so just go straight to them. Tony |

Your register on the backplate can be turned a fraction undersize then with the fixings just nipped up the chuck can be tapped about to get it to run true at which point you can fully tighten the fixings Its something that always puzzled me that one would take care to machine a register accurately and then not use it as a precise and repeatable locating device. The only function of a loose fitting spigot and recess is to roughly align the two before getting out the Manchester screwdriver! I suppose its an acceptable method for something that is not intended to be taken apart. Ian P
Puzzle no more, the loose spigots are used to gain acceptable concentricity from poorly made affordable tooling most of us use. Tony

Never cared much for those folding joint handles. I know the theory is that the swivel joint gives you clearance between the handle and the end of the vice or milling table without the business end being over long. In practice they always seem to be at the wrong angle so a good deal of removal and re-fitting is involved when adjusting and final tightening the vice. Always seem to need two goes at tightening 'cos they are at exactly the wrong angle. Totally agree! Tony

Thread: Bending 12mm square mild steel bar |

Hopper, I took on board your advice that a silver soldered joint would not be strong enough to withstand the forces involved in cuting especially intermittently. So I made a joint between two bits of 1cm square mild steel bar. Putting one end in the vice and a lever on the other end, I could feel the bar flexing but the joint remained sound. I couldn't apply enough force to break or bend the bar or joint. So I'm going to continue with my approach in the knowlege that it will produce a strong tool holder. John I on the other hand thought a silver soldered joint would be fine, glad to be proven right Tony |

Regards from Steviegtr. How do you deal with emails, when a company wants a scan of your passport, or other personal data, address, bank account number, for example? Not having a go at all; genuine question. Do you use encryption software or something? Do people actually intercept emails containing passport details etc?? LOL, so they are advising the owners of keyless cars to use a steering wheel lock for security. Err, seems to rather defeat the object and be going back to square one 1970s style. How about they just make a key system that works? Lot to be said for the old hidden toggle switch in the fuel pump circuit. Simple but effective. This has been happening for years and now we have battery angle grinders a steering lock is no real deterrent. Tony |
