Thread: "Potty" radial engine
19/02/2011 10:31:26
Obvious when you think about it.

Also, the photo no 2 shows the surface between the two under cuts where the cylinder hole breaks through appears to be curved and not flat or am I interpreting the drawing wrong.
19/02/2011 10:01:34
In ME 4397 the general arrangement on page 197 shows the component list but the identification numbers are missing from the drawing.

Why make the crankcase out of 1 3/4" A/F when the largest available stock size appears to be 1 1/2" A/F.

Thread: Who's the material supplier
31/01/2011 11:23:07
Who's the material supplier with a name like college or school supplies ?
Thread: Newbie
28/01/2011 09:27:28
Thinking back many many moons to my school days, a trowel was mild steel, a shoe horn brass, ash tray copper and decorative poker wrought iron. So you can see it all depends what you want to make.
As for suppliers a quick search on t'internet for model engineering supplies will give you stockists.
Thread: Metric or Imperial, Fractions or Decimals

What ever convention you choose stick with it and please do NOT mix them
Thread: Silver solder or braze

When building a boiler or fastening two components together do I use silver solder or braze.
Thread: Warco V Chester
08/01/2011 15:10:28
The ama16vf seems similar for a cheaper price
08/01/2011 12:12:22
Looking at milling machines I'm undecided between the Warco WM14 or the Chester Champion 20V
Any comments?
Thread: New Year's Resolutions

What would I like to see in ME? , Anything, just ensure that the articles and drawings are complete and error free. ME now has a new assistant/sub/deputy editor so there really is no excuse.
Thread: Vertical Centering?
31/12/2010 09:29:14
When you add the two radii together don't forget to include the thickness of the paper

Thread: Can I bore or slot drill instead of counterbore?
13/12/2010 08:53:13
Why not use countersunk set screws
Thread: dividing tuition
05/12/2010 10:37:13
Buy a copy of "Dividing" by Harold Hall. It's no 37 in the "Workshop Practice Series" of books. It explains different methods of dividing as well as the mathematics required to calculate which dividing plate to use. Well worth it
Thread: Paint Brush
17/11/2010 09:29:07
  Definitely needs a construction article
Thread: Why is everything you buy such rubbish!!
08/11/2010 09:41:30
<<In The UK goods must be of a 'Merchantable Quality' and 'Fit for Purpose' under present legislation.>>
So what happens when you subscribe to a magazine and find that it contains drawings with incorrect or missing dimensions. Do you return it and ask for a refund of your subscription as the magazine contravenes the "Sale of Goods Act"
Thread: Cutting threads with dies
02/11/2010 10:04:44
When tapping don't forget to "back off" the tap every so often to stop it from jamming and breaking.

"This should hold the tap tight so all I need is a collet holder with a locating hole for  tommy bar to be able to turn the tap into the body of the material to cut the thread."

If you are using the lathe to tap a hole keep the tap stationary and rotate the lathe chuck by hand. Same applies when using a die on the lathe. Saves having to make a fancy tap holder
Thread: Mistakes in Van Rennes article
31/10/2010 09:58:38
The need for a sub-editor has never been more apparent than the publication of James G Rizzo's article in ME4389. This is not intended as a criticism of the author but was there any reason to publish an article full of so many mistakes.
The text referred to the hole in the base plate as being positioned on the centre line ie. 50mm from the edge but the diagram shows it at 60mm.
The thread in the column is referred to in the text as 3/8 x 26 tpi (10 x 1mm) instead of M10 x 1 and subsequent references as 3/8 ins or 8mm. The components were described as Fig 5 thro Fig 10 but these reference numbers were not attached to the drawings and the descriptions of the components in the text flowed from one to another without being separated by a sub heading.
The sooner we have a sub-editor the better and hopefully we shall have error free articles

Thread: Watering a loco
29/10/2010 10:43:01
When you fire a loco for the first time, how do you fill the boiler with water.
Also, if you wish to store the loco, how do you drain the boiler
Thread: Are steam engines better now in preservation than they were in ordinary service
20/10/2010 09:56:07
i didn't think NZ had a passenger rail infrastructure, I thought it was all goods traffic.
Thread: Finished model too good
11/10/2010 09:22:50
All engines are finished as though they have come straight from the manufacturer's paint shop. Has anyone ever built a gold medal engine with authentic weathering, water stains, calcium deposits and rust streaks ?.
