Thread: Vita brevis

.I asked for a PSA test ten years ago, doctor told me it was 2.2, very low and after the grope around my bum he declared me perfectly ok but I had some blood in a urine sample so he put me on the list to be seen at the local urology department. 3 months later I go to urologist and am told they want to check prostate, I ask why, doctor has recently checked it and pronounced me fine, anyhow they have a feel and find three little bits the size of a glass pin head. Given the choice of having the prostate removed or brachytherapy, I chose the brachytherapy and was sent to the Royal Surrey Hospital at Guildford who were absolutely fantastic, procedure done in an oven afternoon and let out next morning, three years on and they check PSA every six months, it is below point one. I had absolutely no symptoms, only reason I asked about test was because of some celebrities doing a full monty on telly for prostate cancer. Get yourself checked before it’s too late.

I bought some from the last show at Harrogate, I used it very successfully on ally Sweet Pea smokebox saddle castings which had been massively over fettled at the foundry. I built up approx eighth of an inch along the top edge of the casting and then machined it to size. Absolutely undetectable when finished and machined well, still haven’t finished the locos off yet though, maybe next year, maybe not!

Try an online catalogue, Stellram or Sandvik or perhaps APT tools.

Thread: Lathe carbide tool issue

The last two numbers should be the radius, I believe it’s thickness then radius, but could be wrong.

Thread: How much should I ask for these lathe tools?
12/09/2022 19:40:16

Agree with Mark Rand, just about worthless, try your local model engineering club or men’s shed, they may take some off your hands and weigh the rest in for scrap value. I have a collection about the same size from a lifetime of turning the handles.

Thread: Vertical Milling Heads - Are there any published designs?

Now that Huron is a proper mill, what a beautiful machine.

Thread: Jones and Shipman swivel machine vice
12/09/2022 08:56:50

If you intend to use the vice on a surface or cutter grinder it may be best to assemble it dry, oil and grinding grit make a lovely grinding paste, however if you intend using it on a milling machine a bit of oil or light grease would be ok.

Ask at your local model engineering club, there is most probably someone there with a cnc mill who would make a couple for you.

Thread: Anyone ever machined the damage from a mill table ?
09/09/2022 10:31:19

If you have access to the machinery to skim the table it would be worth doing, if it is an old English machine it is probably well seasoned and should not move, if it is modern Chinese you may well improve it.

Obvious place is a spring manufacturers catalogue, try googling spring manufacturers, or buy some spring wire and wind your own.

Thread: Electric boiler feed pumps
04/09/2022 11:41:26

They are not the same sort of pump as used in the UK. Our pumps are submersible in a 40 litre barrel. I have one fitted to my driving trolley for topping up the saddle tank on the loco but it would not have anywhere near enough power to overcome boiler pressure.

Thread: Dasqua measuring equipment any good?
30/08/2022 09:57:17

I have a couple of Dasqua items and am very pleased with them, I would certainly buy their products again.

Thread: Pressure Gauge Dead Weight Tester
28/08/2022 12:36:30

I did make kozo’s dead weight tester many years ago when I had access to some very accurate weighing equipment. As drawn it works very well and has been used by many to check pressure gauges on locos, the only modification I have made is to include an oil reservoir, only needs to be a bit of brass with half inch reamed hole and a piston fitted with an o ring, the piston rod is threaded so piston can be wound in and out of cylinder. In use gauge to be tested is fitted, weights applied and piston turned inwards to force oil under piston to float the weights, sorry for long winded blurb , a pic would have been better, must try harder posting them.

There is one described in one of the Kozo Hirioka books sorry cannot remember which book as I no longer have them.

Nothing wrong with rolled with butt strap, will be cheaper than tube as well.

Thread: MEW 319 - Roofing A Shed??????
19/08/2022 15:23:19

I find it odd that professional technique and equipment being used for 'Model Engineering' upsets some people, almost as if it's cheating. Surely not?

Of yes it does, even at club level, comments of “ his stuff should be good, he got a factory in his garden not a workshop”, so I will publicly apologise for running my own business for 25 years and when I closed it the big machinery went to auction and because the dealers in model engineering sized machines would only offer scrap value for quality tooling I kept it, one dealer in the south came in a transit and filled it with complete sets of 5c collets, dividing heads, good ones, made by Nikken height gauges about a dozen Abwood machine vices, Myford capstan unit and cut off slides etc, guess what they paid, £200, yep two hundred quid, so I kept the rest but I have now given up doing a few articles for club magazines and showing any work, I am far too professional and have too much equipment, I think it’s time I quit this hobby.

I would like to say the work of Cherry Hill, all her work, but seems I am not allowed to say that so I will go with Bongo by Chris Vine

Please correct me if I am wrong but Morton’s is a multi million pound publishing business, do they really need to beg for donations.

hi i ,am roger from suffolk...

You would be better starting a new thread rather than posting in a completely unrelated thread.

Andrew

As Roger from Suffolk is not good with computers maybe the moderators could sort out a new thread for him?
