So what's the difference between using an 80mm facemill compared to a flycutter swinging a similar diameter that makes the facemill cruel? The face mill is far kinder to the machine than a fly cutter. |

A box of 10 turning or milling tips would be very acceptable, also perhaps a gift voucher, I believe EKP supplies and Chronos do them. |

Sorry for being a bit slow coming to this but I think you dodged a bullet not buying the vertical slide from Chronos. I purchased a fixed vertical slide from them about 18 months ago, it came with a free gift of a small machine vice, the vice is beautiful, the vertical slide was c**p. The Acme thread was cut a maximum of ten thou deep, the dial wobbled up and down due to centre hole being out of true and impossible to use throughout its entire travel due to leadscrew being out of line by around five degrees, I had tried looking for a second hand Genuine Myford one but they were either silly money or looked like they had been used as a boat anchor. I ended up putting it right, I made a M10 x 1.5 leadscrew and nut, a new dial, re aligned the leadscrew and now it is fine, shan’t be buying anything from Chronos again though. |

Problem with WD40, Duck oil and many others is the gungy deposit that is left behind when it dries. Waxoil is not really meant to be removed, it is meant to be sprayed into car sills etc and left alone. Last time I tried to obtain Ensis oil the minimum quantity was a fifty gallon drum, again another horrible stuff to remove. |

I see no reason why you can’t use a grub screw, if I were building one I certainly would be using a grubscrew. |

I use ACF50 for rust protection during storage, it’s not cheap but it works. Used it in the military where it was only known by a MIL number, if its good enough for the military, it’s good enough for my little bits and pieces. |
Thread: VMC Mill spindle runout |

No reason why you can’t remachine the R8 taper on the mill itself, just swing the head over to the correct angle and clamp a carbide tool in the machine vice. If you can borrow a toolpost grinder or a Quorn grinding head you could set that up on the table and grind it. |
Thread: Non-steaming models. Sacrilege?? |

It’s your life and you can do your models as you like, I build steam locos and run them on steam, an air line won’t stretch around the track, I build stationary engines and the ones with bronze or gunmetal cylinders get a taste of steam, the ones with cast iron cylinders have to make do with an air line. |

Grindstone Cowboy, I had to take her indoors shopping yesterday and we visited a Marks and Spencer’s food hall, I made a point of looking at their slices of pork pie with egg in the middle and they were using proper eggs, one slice of pie was an end piece and the other a middle bit with yolk. Being a rather sad person I checked all the packs on display and they were the same, obviously Marks and Spencer need to be informed of the continuous egg process, come on, spill the beans! |

My one sounds the same as the one in the video, has always been like it since I bought the machine new from Myford. It hasn’t got any worse over the years and will most probably see me out, I have always put the noise down to poor machining tolerances, I believe the Myford machines were manufactured in Taiwan. |

And how do they do those pork pies with an egg in the middle and in every slice the egg is the same size? (I know the answer, but it might spark discussion Rob Specially bred chickens that lay continuous eggs? |

Surely the top won’t matter, you will clamp a magnetic chuck on to it and then grind the top of the chuck, unless I am being totally thick as usual in which case I apologise. Not surprised at local machine shop attitude I have heard the same story from many people trying to get bits of machining done, they are told to expletive off or told it will cost hundreds of pounds to do a five minute job. |

Thread: Unmachined Kit Suppliers |

Macc models only ordered rew material but quick to send. Hemmingway, had quite a few of their kits but all the bar stock in mine has been dead to size or slightly undersize Stuart, not one of the oldest really, changed hands and are not as good as the older stuff, seem to produce quite a few castings with hard spots. |
