My Godess - in - residence can spend hours looking for things that she has put "somewhere safe", I can't imagine what it would be like if she had one of those to store stuff in

It really is an amazing piece of furniture though.

Thread: Stringer EW lathe

Hi Alan.

I will post the advert later this week, when I have access to home equipment again.

Terry, yes it seems we are doing pretty well on prices these days.

In 1953 the adverts suggest you could have bought an ML7 for £48 and five shillings (48.25), without motor but with a motor pulley.

Using the same source of information about wages the current weekly figure is £465.

It seems that motors were extra on most of the small machinery then, no I'm not old enough to remember those sort of things so have to rely on advertising to inform!

Back on the subject of EW Lathes, in mid 1953 they were advertising an "industrial" model with larger slides and chrome headstock mandrel, all this for an extra £4 and 5 shillings.

Hi Ian.

In 1953 the average (weekly) wage was reckoned to be about £9, that also helps put it into perspective.

Regards.

I do not own an EW lathe but have found a few adverts for them from ME mag the 1950s.

From these it seems that they started as 2 1/2" x 8" machines, then in 1953 became 2 1/2" x 10".

Various improvements seemed to occur over the years and they appear to have been supplied as models A, B, C & D.

There was apparently a review in the 8th December 1949 issue of ME, unfortunately I do not have that issue.

If there is interest in seeing these adverts I can scan them to go in my album, subject to David Clark saying there are no copyright issues involved.

Are the gifts supposed to be available to digital edition subscriptions as well?

Thread: ML7 Lubrication
27/11/2012 19:48:23

oil nip.jpg

Hi Simon B.

My ML7 is fitted with oil nipples throughout, they are screw in and are 2 ba thread size, as you can see I've recently fittted new ones.

I do not know if the sprung ball type nipples on your machine can be removed easily, but you could try phoning Myford for advice.

The lubrication chart (in manual) shows some 17 points which need an oil gun.

Generally speaking I would suggest you get an ML7 manual from Myford Ltd, or Ian Bradley's 'Series 7 manual', which I think has been re-published.

If the stuff is easily moveable take it outside on a cloudy day and take the pictures, that usually works for me.

But do not let the camera's built in flash operate!

Thread: Meccano Gears
19/11/2012 21:52:07

Hi Dunc.

Like yourself I was a Meccano fan in my young days, and have maintained a distant interest over the (many) decades since.

I have used the gears on some projects, they seem to mesh ok and work well, generally I have used them on drives up to Decaperm size motors.

If you can get to one of the Meccano exhibitions you might be surprised to see what people manage to achieve with these items, also parts suppliers attend.

There is also the problem that most people who indulge in constructive Hobbies like ours tend to be their own biggest critics.

When looking at our own models we see any imperfections instantly but might not appraise the whole item, whereas people visiting your house etc will be admiring the finished product.

Thread: The 2012 Model Engineer Exhibition at Sandown Park on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of November
01/11/2012 16:04:09

The centre of Esher is just up the hill from Sandown car park entrance gates, seems to be an assortment of places there.

Expect there will be somebody from the local area around to ask at that sort of time as well.

Terryd.

No money to throw away (unfortunately), but with a Maplin close to home and for one battery every year or longer it hardly seems a major issue.

Maplin supply silver SR44 cells.
