Thread: Gaskets
29/05/2012 10:24:56

'fraid I'm 'old school' when it comes to gaskets - oiled paper is all I have ever used - these days I draw 'em in CAD, print 'em on 80gsm paper, cut out and saturate with 3 in 1 oil.

I built two different tool heads for mine to deal with the problem. Too easy!

Over the years I have tried several different designs, but the Steve Bedair design is by far the best IMHO. Here's my version for the Myford

Will you miss it? YES! And sooner rather than later, more likely. I have two drill presses in addition to the RF30 and the X2 mill and all machines get used very regularly.

I have a preference for good quality carbon steel taps.

Hang on to it by all means - it can be very handy stuff to have on hand when the need arises, and not so easy to get hold of any more.

smiley I simple terms - you rought out the cylinder you want to beacome a ball, apply the appropriate sized wad punch and 'swizzle' it about. ie swing it from left to right and up and down a bit - just like using a swizzle stick.

Form tool for the ball ends? Try swizzling them with a wad punch instead. Works a treat.

Brass might become a health issue once you reach 175 years of age

Ya think?????? Now you've got me worried!

28/03/2012 19:03:26

I'd use the brass - thousands of water heaters are crammed full of brass fittings.

Thread: Castings

At a guess I would say they are for a twin cylinder, vertical, single acting engine, similar to, but not the same as, the Stuart Sirius or Sun.

I don't think there are many that try to make a Black Art of it, most are more than willing to share their knowledge BUT there are ways of making the learning curve a bit less painful - starting on small projects, rather than expensive big castings is one of them.

Anoother thing that helps is having a number of moderators, strategicly placed in different time zones rather than a single mod trying to keep up with post from around the globe.

Thread: Does This Impress You?
05/03/2012 07:12:03

As long as I can remember it has been a sign of quality work - and this bloke seems to agree.

I tend to do it on work that will be visible.

Well, this stirred up a response!

I am not sure if aligning heads up would ever impress me as even if the heads had been machined/selected to ensure alignment I dont know this and would/could still assume that the fixing had been over or under tightened!

Happy screwing!

Alan

Depends on whether the glass is half full or half empty, dunnit.
