Thread: Another 'What Mill' Question
11/09/2010 19:29:45
Hard luck, Chris.  Just when you thought you had some useful information, you now know how to (not) remove a stubborn drill from a Morse taper!  Just to add to your confusion, I bought an XJ12-300 mill from Amadeal a short while ago.  It looks exactly the same as the Warco version, but is cheaper.  I did, however go to the distributor and pick it up, as I happened to be in the UK with my car at the time, but it might be worth checking them out - check delivery charges etc.  Usual disclaimer re connections with the company - just a satisfied customer; only too happy to recommend them.

Happy milling,

John

Thread: Where's the digital edition?
05/09/2010 10:25:35
Whoops!  Sorry.  I seem to have stirred up a bit of a hornet's nest with my original posting.  It was only meant as a tongue-in-cheek josh, but appears to have struck a chord with a few of you.  If it's upset anyone, then I apologise.
Happy swarfing.

OK, last month the latest edition of MEW didn't appear on the Home page for ages.  Then I looked at the digital editions page and there it was.  This month, it's on the Home page but not on the digital issues page - at least not on my subscriber's page.  I always like to look at the digital version while waiting for my subscription, paper edition, to arrive - if only to see what bargains I've missed out on, in the "for sale" small ads!
With a bit of luck , after I've had a bit of a rant, the postlady arrives with it the next day.  Here's hoping!
Rant over.

Thread: ER25 Collet quality
17/08/2010 09:34:43
Versaboss,

No, you can import from HK to France, it's just that I don't have a PayPal account and I prefer to use my credit card to purchase on the internet, for security.  (CTC only accept credit cards via PayPal).
Anyway, France is famed for its cheeses, both high- and low-tensile!

Not strictly speaking about ER collets, but if it's any use helping you make up your mind - I have recently bought on eBay, (via my daughter in the UK), some gear from CTC Tools in Hong Kong. Namely a 50mm boring head with MT3 arbor and 9 boring tools (£60 including postage)  Arrived exactly one week after ordering, direct to me in France.  Also some end mills and a T-slot cutter  (£cheap - can't remember how much).. I haven't used any of them yet, but to my (untrained) eye they LOOK to be of reasonably good quality.  Doubtless somebody will come on the forum and tell me they're made from low-tensile cheese!
Yes, you get what you pay for -but why pay more for the same thing?

Thread: sourcing worm gears

Thanks, everyone.  I have ordered a pair today from College Engineering to be delivered to my daughter in the UK, hopefully in time for her to bring them over in August!

Many thanks to all those who have taken the trouble to reply to my message.  I will follow all the leads and hopefully find what I'm looking for.

Forgive me if this question has been asked (and answered) on this forum before - a search revealed no result.
I am in the process of making a simple rotary table for my new mill.  Originally I hadn't intended to make it with a worm and wheel drive, but have changed my mind.  I have spent many fruitless hours searching the web for a source for the said worm and wormwheel, all to no avail.  Does anybody out there know where I can obtain a pair, preferably in the UK and at reasonable cost, bearing in mind that I live in France and some suppliers won't post here?
Thanks in advance.

Thread: ME Issue 4381 - 02 July - Subscription Copy Delivery ?
12/07/2010 18:29:20
According to issue 165 of MEW, page 57, issue number 166 is due in the shops on 9th July.  My subscription issue hasn't arrived , yet , either.  Ok, I'm not in the UK, but northern France, but they've been arriving pretty well on time of late.  I suppose I can always have a sneaky look at the digital one, although this only appears in the archive, not on the home page.  (I just checked!)

Happy subscribing

Thread: er collets

Jason,

Yes.  It certainly looks like these are the ones I've got!  They may be non-standard, but they work OK so I'll stick with them for now.  Pity ARC don't have the ones I'm missing, or I'd snap up a few!

Hi, Keith,

Not quite sure what you are after, but this link (if it works!) goes to a couple of pages in the Pratt-Burnerd catalogue and will give you the sizes of various ER series collets.  Having said that, they don't tie up with the set I bought with my mill.  Perhaps mine use Chinese mirrimetles!!

Thread: What Lathe and Mill?
18/06/2010 14:59:57
Hi, cheers
(strange name!)
Managed to find the camera and some batteries.  You'll find the pictures in my album.  The 'boys toys' only added about a hundred and ten pounds to the bill and I consider that very good value for money.  My first project I think, will be a rotary table, but due to the difficulty of obtaining raw materials out here, without massive postal bills, I'm going to have to be pretty devious with the design.

John

Just thought I'd chip in my two-pennyworth.  I've just got back here in France from a short holiday in the UK.  By dint of a nifty bit of footwork, I managed to sneak a mill in the boot of the car, almost without my wife noticing!
I bought it from Amadeal in Leytonstone and went to pick it up in person.  It's an XJ12-300.  Not the one I had originally intended to buy, but just as good, I reckon, and a bit cheaper, too at £412.  Hugh, the guy that runs the place is a charming man, couldn't have been more helpful.  The warehouse is not the most tidy of places to visit, but I didn't go there to enjoy the view, just to get a good deal.  He also carries extensive spares for all the machines he sells as well as a very tempting assortment of accessories - so, of course I came away with all sorts of extra goodies as well.  The mill is now bolted to the workbench, waiting to cut its first bit of metal.  I'll post a photo, if I can remember where we put the camera.
Best of luck with your purchase.

Thread: MEW Renewal
20/11/2009 09:45:12
Funny.  I had a similar letter and had no problem with the link.  In fact, I just clicked on the link in your posting and went to the renewal section, straight away!  I very kindly bought myself another year's subscription for Christmas.

For what it's worth, I use the OpenOffice drawing package.  It's a free, open-source program and does what I want and very well too.  Dimension lines that automatically re-size themselves, as well.  It doesn't have all the "bells and whistles" that a dedicated CAD package does - but then again it does exactly what it says on the tin - it draws a picture!  Isn't that what you want?  Just about everything is customisable.  I've taken a little time to make up templates for A4 and A3 paper sizes, with grid lines at 1cm spacing, rulers side and top and specified text styles and dimension units and positions.  I could go on, but you'll lose the will to live!
As a bonus, the OpenOffice suite also comes with a presentation package (like Powerpoint), spreadsheet (Excel), database (Access), formula creation and word procesor (Word).  All are Microsoft compatible and will even export directly into pdf format.  What more could you ask?

John

Thread: Current Issue?

I am always astounded by the power of the internet.  Hardly had the 'ink' dried on my posting to start this thread, than the post lady arrived this morning with the missing October issue!  Now I'll have to sit down and read it and the grass cutting will have to wait!

Browsing through the back issues for subscribers section, I noticed that the latest issue described therein is issue number 155 (October 2009).  This came as a bit of a surprise as I'm only up to issue 153 (August 2009).  Although a subscriber, admittedly only since December last year, I always semm to receive my magazines very late.  OK, I live in France, but normal airmail letters arrive within two or three days, at the most, from th UK.  Why, when the publisher's advertising states that as a subscriber you can read the small ads days before anyone else, does it take so long to get here?  Anybody else have similar problems?

Thread: Choosing a lthe
20/08/2009 19:40:36

Still on the base of its crate because it was too darn heavy for my wife and I to lift it off!  Yes, I finally went and bought a Chinese import.  Looks remarkably like a Warco BV20, but came with a stand and a 3-jaw chuck and precious little else.  By the time I'd added a 4-jaw, fixed steady, set of lathe tools, revolving centre etc, etc - you know how it is-it was still cheaper than the equivalent from Blighty, and significantly so.  I had to go to Caën, about an hour away, to pick it up, but the cricket was on the wireless, so it was quite a pleasant trip.  I still have to cut a few metres off the existing bench so that I can fit it in the garage under a window, so I don't expect to be using it very soon.  I'll keep you posted on how it's progressing.
