Thread: Myford Hoover Motor

I do suggest a half horse motor shouldn't ever trip a circuit breaker. Something ain't right. Earth leak would be my bet.

Dave

Hi,A 1/2 hp Brook motor on an ML7 takes nearly 50A for 100mS on start ,this will sometimes trip a domestic mcb but probably wouldn’t trip an inductive load mcb ,as previously mentioned .An earth leakage fault would trip the elcb not the mcb.

1361d5cf-dead-44f3-933a-21eb985dcd5f.jpegHi,I’ve restored a Lucas K2F magneto ,changing internal capacitor etc ,wasn’t too difficult .

I made a simple test rig as it was hard to test it on the bike

l read somewhere that the spark needs to cross a 5mm gap in open air, which mine did.

Hope this helps

Maurice

PS If you need to take the armature out ,try to find out if it will affect the magnetism in the stator, best to try to do work with armature left in place .

benchHi It’s very good idea to use your grinder outside, the wind and rain cleans the mess up.

Easiest way to mount it ,is get a small piece of kitchen worktop or similar and bolt grinder to it then screw length of 4 x 2 to bottom of worktop. This can then be clamped either in either a vice or a Black and Decker workmate.

I’ve had an outside vice for years for big and dirty jobs also an outside bench Hope this is useful.

Hi ,What’s the point of trying all these things ,when the proper tool is £6 at Machine Mart.If you damage it ,a helicoil kit will cost a lot more also a lot more time than the 2minutes this tool will take. I have one of these .

Thread: Whitworth v UNC
18/11/2020 10:06:48
Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 18/11/2020 09:41:33:

What a good question! I can't remember ever using the threaded holes in my blocks, which I bought expecting them to be metric. I just checked - they're; M8, which doesn't help MC at all.

My guess is MC's blocks are most likely 3/8"x16UNC because it's a current thread-form common in the US. BSW is unlikely because it's been fading away since the UK standardised on Unified Threads in 1948,. BSW survived in UK motor manufacturing until about 1980, but since then hasn't been used in new designs. Unified threads didn't replace BSW wholesale in the UK because metrication provided a better alternative.

BSW and UNC ⅜ x 16tpi threads fit together, but it's not recommended. The fit is weak because the thread angles are 5° different - low holding strength, and liable to come apart when vibrated. More likely to be done by accident than deliberately but the bodge may not matter in 1-2-3 blocks. If it does matter, the Internet is your friend. Although new BSW are hard to source, there are loads of people selling them second-hand on ebay. UNC are available new, but they too are gradually fading away.

Advice to anyone setting up a new workshop in 2020, go metric young man!

Dave

Hi ,What new vehicles were still using Whitworth in 1980 ?

There are plenty of new BSW nuts and bolts of all types on ebay ,probably hard to get in diy store.

I had discovered previously the same thread but was confused by mention of lights as mine appears to have no visible indicators - catch is I cannot extract it from the case - the front bezel once a rubber seal in moved can be twisted but doesn't want to come away from the 'can' protecting the mechanism

Hi ,Have you had a look at makers website and downloaded instructions ? Why do you need to get it out of case, connections and switches should be on back.

I would start by looking here: **LINK**

https://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/random-rev-counter

and continue by wondering if it’s worth more to them than you could buy an alternative for.

MichaelG.

Hi ,this link gives you the name of the maker .Put name in google ,to find website ,this has instructions for gauges .

I think you might be able to drive it direct from a Hall sensor

Can anybody explain in non technical terms what is wrong with the forum ? I’ve used it for a few years and can’t see anything wrong. I use an Ipad mini and have had no problems reading the forum on it,other than my photos being upside down when put on ,that’s sorted now.

How can people complain when it is free. Change and upgrade for the sake of it is pointless.

Thread: First workbench, for an ML7 lathe

Hi, I used coated 1.6mm steel for mine because I’d been given it .Otherwise I would have used 12mm plywood ,bolted on with 6mm set screws or coach bolts. Its easier to add shelves etc when using wood.I also made a pair of raising blocks from offcuts of the square tube . Hope this helps

Hi, Very similar to mine, you won’t have any problems with twisting as it is. I can’t fault any aspect of that bench. Money well spent.

Hi, It might be worth fitting a fuse in one of the motor leads, then if the motor stalls ,it will hopefully blow the fuse before damaging the controller .

Hi Hollowpoint The diodes are on Amazon **LINK** .I would also check if the power transistors are shorted before fitting new diodes.

Hope this helps

Maurice.

01/11/2020 19:47:09

I can see bad joints on both side of board ,one on the diode near orange capacitor and one on the other side near serial number.I would think the diodes are shorted and blowing the fuse.

I do not mean to be rude ,but if you’re not fully competent with working at mains voltage ,take it to somebody who is.

You have to consider the whole board to be at mains potential.
