The "Spindle Speed" thread is coming out overlaid by the ads on the RH side |
30/01/2010 20:42:47 |
I have had this too, also at random. It usually reverts ( perhaps"pops"
would a better word ) to normal after a second or so but sometimes it
lasts for a whole session |
Thread: Prescription Safety Specs |
24/01/2010 11:55:01 |
A word of caution. I was provided with a pair by my employer. They were like ordinary specs in ordinary frames and caused no difficulty
in use. But one day a sliver of glass flew upwards and passed
between my cheek and the lower edge of the lens frame and so into
my eye. It landed sideways on the eyeball so although held in by
surface tension, it didn't stick, and I was able to float it out in a basin
of water. Lucky.
I now use goggles that have something of a seal all round.
The only question is, do I always use protection or does the hassle
and poor vision sometimes deter me? Goodness knows. |
Thread: Brass Shell Case |

The 3.7" AA gun's round was notorious for being heavy enough to
set itself off simply by being stood base down on an unlucky bit of grit.
There are several reasons why an HE round will not go off before it
has been fired but even so, I would not deliberately throw one off the
top of a tank. If that really was Meyrick's habit, I begin to wonder if
hygroscopic Delrin was the real cause of his troubles. The fact that
APDS contains no explosive seems a poor reason for failing to
respect it.

Thread: What type of oil to use on a Milling machine |
13/01/2010 17:31:04 |
You will see that I started a thread "Long term rust prevention" under "Beginners' questions" on 10th July. Quite a bit of very interesting
information emerged. |

A friend has bought at auction a beautiful WW1 Field Gun about 1 1/2 " to the ft. It is signed ' CEG 79'. Can anyone
please say anything about CEG ? |
Thread: Workshop Heating |

Burning propane in air produces water in England and ice in Scotland. The mass of ice produced in Scotland is the same as the mass of
water produced in England and is, I am sorry to say, independant of
the type of burner. There is little benefit from changing fuel, for example
paraffin oil is almost identical. Charcoal is a lot better and has the
disadvantage of producing carbon monoxide under some conditions.
Wait till summer. |
Thread: HTS Bolts |
01/01/2010 12:28:14 |
Well, Meyrick I was not surprised by your reply to my question about torque on clamp bolts under the 'table cover' thread. It all seemed
sensible but now we have a couple of contributors saying that MS bolts
stretch too much! Even baby 1/4" bolts would need fair old torque to
stretch enough to affect their clamping surely?
Are these contributors perhaps some of the sailors the Admiralty
found stripping anything under 1/2" Whit? |
Thread: Cover for a milling machine table |

Meyrick, when you say clamps torqued down, do you just mean 'give it
a judicious bit er welly', or do you measure the torque? |
Thread: Cup wheel for finish grinding mild steel |
31/12/2009 01:40:28 |
Grinding steel, or anything containing iron, will destroy a diamond wheel, unless you take it paralytically slowly.

Thread: Washers |
28/12/2009 02:48:28 |
Don't bother, Raymond. I see it now, it's just dissimilar metals. You must understand, I am a bit thick as well as knowing very little.

I follow the chamfering Raymond but not, I'm afraid, the silver plating. Could you please expand a bit. |

I have to say that, contrary to Gordon W's fears, the contributions to this thread have been for me instructive, interesting and amusing. I was sorry
to learn that spring washers don't dig in much, they feel so nice as you do
them up. I shall go on using plain washers and lots of grease for general
fixing for the same reason, though I now know that the washer contributes
little and the grease may make things worse - but I might smirk a bit if
the joint has to be undone again sometime.
My thanks to all who have contributed so far. |

When should one put a washer under (a) a nut (b) a bolt head? |

Mother Nature says Mike Cox is right and that my brain hs gone like a tin of RTD. I'm not going to tell you what my punishment is, I'll just say it is
condign. Ferric chloride will etch steel. |
19/11/2009 10:11:01 |
My Jenolite came from a motor factor a couple of years ago. £7 for half a litre. This was the watery variety, not the jelly. If this is another good thing
that has vanished, I shall mourn it. Shell Care International Ltd 0161 935 7490.
Usual Disclaimer. |
18/11/2009 21:37:52 |
Your information is so impressive Mike that I shall consult Mother Nature
the ultimate authority, and report further. |
18/11/2009 17:46:27 |
Whoops, £80 for Geo Thomas eh John! Mine were much cheaper. Still, you must read them. Find a ME smaller than yourself and "borrow" them! By the
way, I am a lot bigger than you.
Ferric chloride will not etch steel, Mike. I don't think that faster action on stressed
metal will be enough to make a visible difference. Phosphoric acid ( Jenolite )
will etch steel, so will sulphuric. Hydrochloric works but somehow seems to
leave behind it an increased tendency to rust. I don't believe unmasked
etching will be successful. If you try it and win, I am prepared to look silly!
