Thread: Special Magazine Subscription Offers for Father's Day
11/06/2014 15:13:38

I`m still waiting for my very special free gift which or dearly departed previous editor conned us with back in November last year. So no I shall not be partaking of any so called "offers" which MTM or whatever they call themselves this week offer.

I wonder if there are any statistics (wonderful things they are. Ha b#####y Ha) on how many fell for these so called offers.

Rant over.

Thread: Passenger carriage
20/05/2014 15:42:29

There is an article Building a 5" gauge passenger coach it starts in ME Vol 175 issue 4007 & goes on for a total of 18 articles the last being Vol 178 issue 4041. Sorry I can`t help other than this as I disposed of most of my back copies. I seem to remember it was pretty well detailed as a coach but was also suitable a a ride on vehicle.

Hope this helps. Have a look on Colin Usher`s site it gives all the issues.

Lee,

I`ve got an old Myford leadscrew & yes its worn in the usual place.ie near the chuck end. However as JS states above you could turn it a*** aboutface. I replaced it on my original ML7 years ago but kept it in the cuminandy box.

So far it hasn`t so if you want it you can have it for the postage/carrier price if you want. I`m assuming you are in the UK.

No Kevin it isn`t just you. I`m the same as you & Martin.

By the way anyone else noticed that the header on this site shows issue 208 of MEW as current . Perhaps someone can get MEW back on the same footing as ME which seems to be kept up to date regularly!

Thread: Old penny worth turning.....
26/01/2014 20:35:34

Rik,

Like you I`ve about a dozen of those GV tins & strangely enough 2 of them contain both pennies & half pennies.

Drill a suitable size hole through the centre & bob`s yer uncle penny washers or halfpenny washers. They are soft enough to bend to hold corrugated sheet. You can`t spend them but you can recycle !

Thread: Extra Special Subscription Gift for Model Engineers’ Workshop
10/01/2014 15:45:16

Well I renewed my subscription on 19/11/13 (see previous post). Seems like it would be issue 212 before "the Gift" would arrive. 212 landed this morning but no gift. Couple of good articles, lots of adverts, couple of pages about garden sheds, should have bitten the bullet at the time & not bothered renewing.

In my opinion MEW is approaching the cliff edge in that the standard set at its beginning has been dropping off for the past few years however this forum & the information & advice given on it is the one saving grace.

Dons flak jacket ,tin hat & goes back to the workshop.

Can one still be a forum member if no longer a subscriber???

Thread: What have you recycled today?
10/01/2014 00:28:57

A few months ago a good friend of mine had 2 very large lasers delivered to his factory. He asked me to help him get them unpacked & moved into position. This we did. But then what do we do with the packing crates! He didn`t want them & said do you. Yes please I said. Very nice 12mm multiply supported by 100x20mm backing pieces. 1 piece 3mx3m, 4 pieces 1mx 3m & thats just one. My workshop is a 2 car garage with the doors facing the prevailing wind. It`s also the usual single brick walls but it does have a pitched insulated roof & is split in 2 by a partition wall which I put up when we moved here. Its been a good workshop but B++++y in Winter. So!!

Out with Portable saw cut the bits to size to fit in car, buy some polythene sheet , dismantle all the shelves etc etc I`d previously put up then start to fit the panels to the walls, also putting in insulating sheets which came with the packing cases. Finished the job a couple of weeks ago & today put the last of the shelves back in place.

Net result a nice snug WARM workshop which only cost about £20 . Its amazing what things you find that you`d forgotten you had when you do something like this so I thing I`ll be having a sale!

Very definitely what we called a "Crows Foot" ie WD or now MoD marking & the year of manufacture. Not to sure about the 10G or 12G marking though but dont think it has anything to do with gas. More likely used to cleanup/repair a damaged thread possibly on weapons.

Bit of a coincidence about your Dad Ady, my Dad enlisted in1940 into the RAOC & transferred into REME when it was formed. I was only a year old then & can`t remember seeing him till just before he went across the Channel with the rest in 1944. He was demobbed in 1945. I`ve still got his cap badge and all the metric spanners he liberated which my son uses on his car . Little did he know then that much later his son would also work for the REME.

I know John, but I`m one of those strange people that like to read the magazine, put it down & refer again to it at my leisure. I also think that the digital display is crap with a capital C!!

15/02/2013 00:45:02

Well its now 4 days since I posted re none arrival of MEW 200 & guess what it has still not arrived.

However, I`ve just received a direct email from our Editor telling me that it is now on sale from today !!

So I`ll just go down to WHS & get one in the morning. Waste of time buying a subscription isn`t it.

Regards very pissed off customer

11/02/2013 14:42:46

You are lucky Gary mine still has not arrived & neither did issue 199 but I was lucky enough to pick up the last copy of that one in WHS. Looks like I`ll have to do the same again.which kinda pees me of having been a subscriber for many years.

Thanks for that Neil & Bill,

I had a very vague memory that Dad used boiling water to melt it down. Just discovered another 3 blocks total weight of the lot is 27 Lbs so might just put some on fleabay but postage would be skyhigh.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Having a bit of a clearout (again !) in the workshop & have come across 6 blocks of Cerrobend. Anyone have any ideas where this comes in the whitemetal arena?? I seem to recall that my late Dad used it for pipe bending
