The builder of my loco chose to use 4BA steel hexagonal socket cap head screws to attach the steam dome to its bush, similarly, the regulator assembly uses the same fixings.

I am removing these screws as there is a weep from the regulator assembly. Removal is proving difficult enough where there is space aplenty, i.e. the steam dome but the dome is now off and I shall probably use alum to eat away at the remnants of the screws. I have yet to tackle the six screws holding the regulator assembly in place.

What is the current thinking for replacement screws. I have it in mind to use M4 x 20mm marine grade stainless steel hexagonal socket cap head screws or even M5 if space permits.

Is my thinking flawed?

Brian is from Northern Kentucky so products might be different. (As an aside his channel is well worth viewing; surely few home machinists have a 20 ton boring mill and a 15 ton bridge crane).

Thread: Its a what?

Kant-twist clamps made in California but available in the UK from MSC/J&L; they feature in many US machinist YouTube videos, e.g. Oxtoolco and, I believe, NYC CNC made some of the components at one time. They were even included in the company's discounted flyer last month, consequently I have two pairs.

Hey Jason, I thought maybe that was a de-burring device.

I've been struggling with an all copper Yarrow boiler to the design of Terrence Holland's for about eighteen months but my efforts are completely insignificant compared to this large one by Kiwi Noel:

Not many of the images have captions and I can't work out how the small diameter tubes are joined to the steam and mud drums.

Another vote for the company mentioned by the OP; hex. .601" A/F Colphos 90 ordered from M-Machine yesterday morning, arrived today - 24hr/by return service - superlative.

Thread: MECCANO compatible pieces, any ideas?

Not forgetting 'MECCANO MAGAZINE'. There is one Ebay vendor who sells the whole lot on DVD for a ridiculous £4.95.

Thread: What metal could this be?
31/07/2014 22:48:44

The IBM labs in the village of Hursley, Hampshire is about five miles from the city of Winchester and it's possible that that your metal came out of a 'Winchester' disc pack, but please do not be mis-led, the name has more to do with a rifle than the city. . As you've hinted, this technology is, at the very least, 20 years old, my guess is more like 40 years old . I had many friends who worked at the complex but all have been retired for five years or more, nevertheless, you could make enquiries.
