Thread: Why is the pilot diameter of a counterbore so large?
30/01/2017 19:30:06

A 5mm screw will go through a 5mm hole, provided it is in the right place. Using a larger clearance hole gives some wriggle room, bearing in mind the 2 mating components may not have been made in the same place at the same time. Standard counter bores are made for standard cap screws with this in mind.

David, could you have reversed the eccentric rods to connect to the wrong ends of the expansion links?

Thread: KRV2000 (bridgeport clone) sliding pulley bush replacement
06/01/2017 14:50:32

Mark, Oilite bushes are not good at taking heavy and intermittent side loads as would be experienced in this application, for that reason I would not use one for this application.

Thread: Elbow joints for 4mm (OD) copper tubing
02/01/2017 17:10:36

Timothy, you can buy miniature unmachined elbow castings from PM research in the USA, they are not dear and you can put your own thread/hole in them. they do 1/8" and 3/16" inch versions, your 4mm or 5/32 as near as dammit would certainly be possible in the larger size mentioned.

Thread: what did santa bring?
30/12/2016 16:07:00

Santa brought me a nice new 12.5mm drill, so I am off out into the workshop to start work on a new trailer. Chris Gunndsc03382.jpg

Thread: Rob Roy drain cocks
30/12/2016 15:25:28

Mike, I did not think about trying a tapping drill in the hole as Jason suggests, you could try a drill in one of the holes you did not put a screw in, tapping drill for 5/32 x 40 tpi is 1/8", and for 3/16" x 40 tpi it is 5/52". I would not imagine it would be any bigger from what you have told us so far. I can make you a screw to test if it is an ME thread once the New Years festivities are over.

Mike if the original builder planned to use commercial drain cocks these would normally be threaded with an ME thread, such as 5/32" x 40 or 32 tpi.

Thread: Fitting a Cast Iron Liner into an aluminium Barrel
23/11/2016 19:21:53

Bob, when I was making branding machines we needed to ensure full heat transfer with no air gaps between the element and the housing, and we used "Heat sink compound" to fill in the gaps. It was a white sticky stuff and stayed sticky, and filled in the gaps.

Thread: Thrust washer
11/11/2016 17:21:36

Wolfie, if you were to tell us what bike you were working on or sizes then I am sure someone will know what 86-1234 is. It is more than likely it is or was a commercially made bearing which could be available.

Thread: Wyvern Gears
11/11/2016 17:14:36

David another alternative method would be to make a 3/8" diameter mandrel to slip the gear on, tap say an M5 hole in the end, and hold it in place with a thick washer and a socket head screw, then machine the teeth away gently. Then you can turn the gear around and do the other end.

Thread: Purchasing a Milling machine
11/11/2016 16:59:49

Andy, you need to check the headroom on your mill carefully if you want to tap parts 240mm high, as the part plus chuck plus tap plus centre to guide it or tapping chuck plus whatever work holding device will soon add up. The same applies when milling depending on how you hold the cutter and work piece.

I have a 9" raising block on my Bridgeport which is one way to get extra headroom, maybe this is possible on the milling machines you are looking at.

Thread: Bantam cross slide screw.
11/11/2016 16:51:54

Alan, no hole in my Bantam either, but maybe you could pop another oiler in it as it is over the lead screw, this will keep dirt out and oil on the screw. Could this hole have let c***p in the hole which wore out the lead screw nut?

Mick further to my post check out Toolstation who have a selection.

Chris Gunn

Mick you can buy wire brushes for angle grinders, the 4" and 4.5" ones have an M14 thread, and many tool suppliers stock them to fit. You can also get backing pads for sanding disc and flap wheels to fit in place of the grinding discs. Somebody will be along with a link in a minute.

Thread: A VERY long shot!!!!
10/11/2016 09:45:46

CJ, Sorry to hijack the post, but I was interested to read you had surge damage, was this just after a power cut? we had one a few weeks back, a momentary one after which my bedroom clock went haywire. Logic tells me the power cut was the cause, but Western power refuse to pay for a new one citing that no employee of Western power did anything wrong. Has anybody else had items fail immediately after a power cut?
