I had to get a Warco VMC machine (same as the 626) from my garage door to my workshop via a step up of about 5" height. Total distance about 25 feet. First beware the weights given for the machines! The Warco website says the machine is 415Kg - I believe this is the total crated weight. The Grizzly 626 (USA clone with an excellent manual HERE says 800lb or 363Kg and the label attached to my Warco machine itself gives a weight of 380Kg. The Chester website gives a weight of 320Kg for their 626. If you have a step to get over as I did then make yourself two ramps - timber will do but they must be sturdy - these will allow you to get up and down the step. You will also need an engine crane of at least 1 ton capacity (2 tons would be much better but I already had the 1 ton crane) - Just be aware the machine exceeds the safe load for a 1 ton crane at full jib extension), A flat "trolley" about 2ft square with four heavy duty castors for wheeling bits around and uip and down the ramps if you use them (you can make this yourself - I used a frame of 4"x2" timber and a top of a double layer of 20mm OSB, all firmly screwed and glued together). Several large blocks of timber (about 4"x8" approx. 18" long. A garden center sleeper does very well for this but you will have to cut it up!). A second person is also very useful, even if they don't do any lifting they can hand you things and generally help out. I suggest taking the machine apart to move it. The head and motor should come off as one unit - you will have to undo the wiring at some point to separate them. The table will also come off (take the handles/leadscrews off first). The main machine body should also separate from the base. Take your time and plan each move you make - these are very heavy lumps of metal you are dealing with. Needless to say a pair of proper steel toecapped shoes or boots are essential. Hope this helps - if you are not used to moving heavy machinery then do take care!! . Had a single garage roller door fitted by a local firm for £780 all done - back in 2018. Your quote for 4K seems rather excessive!! |

Thread: Quorn Workhead Conundrum. |
30/08/2022 20:09:13 |
Bolting on a seperate lug has always been an alternative construction method as has making the circular t-slot around the workhead by making the part in two or three pieces and loctiting the assembly together. When these methods were first mooted in ME Professor Chaddock approved!. As stated above the Bonelle drawings show what is needed. ( Just note that you can get both imperial and metric versions of the Bonelle). I am making a Bonelle at the moment and made these parts a few weeks back. Hopefully the picture gives an idea - note the different coloured steel above and below the t-slot showing the construction. (Nothing bolted together at this stage!) Sold by both Chester and Warco several years ago now but either may have some spares possibly. I olso found this video (in chinese!) that you may find useful https://youtu.be/bcjOtdNqxm4 Searching for "CT125" (without the quotes) seems to be a good place to start. A quick Google of "copy music from CD to flash drive" brought up dozens of hits and videos etc of how to do that. Basically "rip" using media player and then copy and paste to the USBdrive. |
Thread: Difficulty in repairing a bonded 5mm green polyurethane drive belt |
10/08/2022 21:39:14 |
Have you cut back the ends of the failed belt? You need to make the join with "fresh" plastic - even if it is a decade old. Trying to re-bond an old joint will fail. |
Thread: 7 1/4" Dart Martin Evans or John Smith |
04/08/2022 12:19:50 |
I've just found Dave Goodwins advert for Dart castings from November 1982 - probably his first for the design - the design series was just about ending about then. Prices as follows: Main Horns £5.40, Axle boxes and keeps £4.20, D&C Wheels £16.00, Trailing wheels £6.00, Cylinder set £18.00, Motion plate £2.10. I hate to think what todays prices are for the same components!! |
26/07/2022 19:42:29 |
D Goodwin was Dave Goodwin from Rishton near Blackburn, an independent castings supplier. The codes are his casting list codes - DT for Dart castings. He was active in the 80's and 90's, maybe also the 00's. Edited By Bizibilder on 26/07/2022 19:43:53 Edited By Bizibilder on 26/07/2022 19:46:58 |

My immediate reaction would be to say get a professional - presumably a structural engineer? If you do it yourself and there is an accident (structural failure) you may regret it big time! I doubt " I thought it looked strong enough" would stand up as an defense in court. |

K & S Metals - from modelmakers hobby shops do 1/4" by 1/32" by 12" long which could be cut down. Otherwise you will need to buy suitable sheet and cut a strip from it. Edited By Bizibilder on 21/04/2022 14:21:12 |
Thread: Polishing Brass |
05/04/2022 21:50:19 |
Not a belt sander! It's the last thing you should use. File the edges of the brass using fine files (No4 or No6 cut). Then polish use diminishing grades of emery paper - start at 400 or 600 grit and follow with 600, 800 then 1200. After that you can use a micro polishing paper ( i think its called 3000 grade?) (or best of all crocus paper if you can still get it). Lastly use Solvol Autosol polish (its a paste that comes in a tube). Lots of patience and you will get a mirror polish. Remember to never go to a finer grade of paper until you have removed all the scratches from the previous one. I just bought a hand held tachometer and use that if I need to know the exact speed. I did use it to construct a graph of actual speed vs frequency setting - one line for each belt position. I do have a tachometer fixed to the milling machine and that is useful, however you soon get used to setting the correct speed by "feel". |

If it is both Brittle and sticky then the most likely cause is that it was not fully mixed. Otherwise I agree with the above - warm it by placing above a radiator for a day. |
Thread: Workshop Practice #49 worth it? |
05/02/2022 16:41:02 |
it describes the Milling machine and has photos and brief descriptions of several commercially available machines as examples. It also describes the additional equipment that you may need (e.g. rotary tables, dividing heads, clamps and vices). There is a section on basic use of the machine and a short chapter on keeping your cutters in good condition. My copy was published in 2011 and, unless there has been an update, it is really quite out of date from the point of view of machinery that is currently available.
