622 forum posts 46 photos | Hi Guys, I intend experimenting with a commercial clock wheel / pinion cutter. I have looked at a few sites but am unsure on a few points. Could any one help? firstly My Mill is Sherline and Sherline do supply commercial cutter arbours as follows: 7/8 dia arbour. These come as short or standard length. 1 inch dia arbour again in short and standard length. So are most( relevant to clock work) cutters in the UK 7/8 or 1 inch and is the standard length a better first time purchase over the longer standard arbour. I imagine the different arbour lengths are to accommodate z axis space but as yet I am fairly ignorant over these matters. Chris |

![]() 3445 forum posts 62 photos | Presumably you have a lathe, why not turn up your own arbors to suit whatever you are doing.? 7/8" and 1" sound like arbors for Gear cutters which are generally larger than clockmakers cutters. Typical PP Thornton pinion cutters are 24mm dia around 4.5mm thick and have a 7mm bore. regards Martin |

I have some old I would imagine involute cutters I was given with a 25mm bore. I have been advised these can be used to touch up teeth or leaves but hey as yet I have little idea, so asking as much as possible along side my research. Chris
