Machine Covers

I have just completed the machining and fitment of a magnetic DRO to the z axis quill on my Chester Lux milling machine and would like to replace the old cover which is too heavy. Can anyone suggest a firm that could make one in a plastic material similar to the Myford lathe covers please.

I have neither a Lux nor a Myford and my telepathy is on the blink today - can you be a bit more specific? Are you talking about a belt cover currently made out of ? cast iron, aluminium. sheet steel? Some mills and drills use glass fibre which you could mould yourself.

Maybe I am missing the point - Robert, I understand you just want a dust cover over the whole machine? Must it be a rigid material? Actually not sure what you are asking for, but if just a cover, then what about this: - I purchased the smallest one intended for a quad-bike - a motorcycle cover might also be suitable?

Its is a tough, waterproof material, stand up well to oils, etc ( well, after a year all still good) - has an elastic around the edge and pulls up close around the machine - comes in all sizes, from a large SUV to a moped.

I use a plastic/fabric seat outdoor seat cover from a garden store for the milling machine. They come in all shapes and sizes and are used to protect outdoor furniture from the winter weather.

It has proved more durable than the Myford cover. Both have their disadvantages, the plastic Myford cover goes stiff after a time while the plastic skin of the seat cover starts to flake off after a few years.

Throw a bedsheet over it. Keeps the dust off and reduces the risk of condensation. You can wash it when it gets grubby too.

Sad to say, my Lux machine remains as naked as the day it was made.

I cover the mills and lathes as I live on the edge of a desert, on the West coast ocean - we have lots of mist, very high moisture, and regular East Winds in the winter, which brings tonnes of sand/dust/mica from the desert - Cloth covers ( sheets, etc) would just collect the dust and deposit it on the slides when I remove/replace the sheets! The car covers are smooth, slippery and impervious.
