Thread: Too lazy or too stupid?
04/03/2022 10:41:21

Hopper, chill out mate, why don't you say what you REALLY meanlaugh

Problem with many answers to same question is how do you disseminate the 'Correct' one? Ask 20 'Ingineers' the same question and you'll get 20 different answers and I speak from a lifetime in the industry.

Many roads lead to Rome.

Regards Ian.

Case and point Bob, Spell check would have corrected it and yes Phil, so would the Magazine if those interested had BOUGHT it. or ever attended the 'Free' WH Smith library.

Thread: Diminishing chocolate bar
04/03/2022 10:26:30

One favourite luxury I buy from the big 'M' (supermarket) are the Lindt Lindor offerings. I carefully watch the prices of this BUT beware. On 'offer' at times, 3 of the smaller boxes for £10, at the moment about £5 each or the larger box on offer at £7.50. Which is the best value? Wonder how many look at the Yellow 'Price per 100gm" label on the face of the rack containing them? Same with St Agur cheese, another of my luxuries, normal price £2.40, offer same for £1.80 - 4 packs quickly in trolly..

Seen a few weeks ago, 500gm box of Lurpac butter £3, 1kg box (Twice the weight for those incapable of 2 x table) for £7.50? DOH.

Thread: Too lazy or too stupid?
04/03/2022 09:57:53

Oh dear Bazyle, how dare you question the "There's no such thing as a stupid question" brigade? Been critisized on numerous occasions for "Oh yes there is". NEVER has it been easier to find documented answers. Before t'internet, the only way to obtain such was to get off ones butt and go to the public library but now, the keyboard warriors are too lazy to type "Search" and it's too easy to suck someone elses brain cells, thus the same old same old repeat questions. Having said that, some forum search engines are useless. Back to the halowed pages of specialist magazines, questions, if considered important enough would take weeks to have an answer published, THIS media offers an instant 'Hook'.

Regards Ian.

PS. STILL no post numbers OR spline chunk.

Thread: Front door locks
22/02/2022 10:43:22

Bet there's a U-tube to show how even the Avocet ABS locks with the magnetic inserts built into the keys can be foiled. You can only try to make a perps life difficult, if they're intent on entry, the only deterrent is against the law.

Thread: Blocked Drain
22/02/2022 10:36:42

Reason for the separate surface/foul water rules were so the treatment stations saved money when dealing with surface water in not having to go to the same extent to 'Clean' it before throwing it into the rivers. Given the amount of effluent that manages to 'Escape' one wonders about the wisdom of this? One builder questioned the wisdom of this when in the past, all water went down the same pipes, thus helping to keep the system flushed.

Other problems now are the wreckless developements where new properties are coupled up to existing drainage systems which over the years have become overloaded plus the anything down the toilet cult.

How is it that so many look in wonder at how things were done here before we became 'Educated' and 'Civilised' and had money to burn on gear we don't really need for non mass production jobs.

Wonder why so many big firms used to have the late Sir John on their lists?

Thread: Smart meter

Seems the latest generation of 'Smart@ meters may have to go to a third generation as, around Fylingdales, they are accused of affecting the nuclear warning systems.

Thread: What are these connectors called?
19/02/2022 10:13:23

Hmm, Scotchloks, IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) as stated. a pain for auto electrical quick connections. Strangely enough, a smaller versions favoured by the telecoms companies for both internal socket and external extension connection.

Not much to go wrong with an eight speed 'Crash' gearbox, - - - providing you don't try to change speed with the machine running. I know it's heresy not to accept the power (or not) of electronics but hey ho Luddites rule.

Thread: Yesterday channel at 21.00
16/02/2022 11:07:06

Problem is with many 'Technical' programmes is the audience that watches them is far more savvy than the presenters on the subject they're spouting about. Alternative is to put Joe public on to talk about his specialist subject but unfortunately many come across as legends in their own lunchboxes. Many cringe worthy examples on "Secrets of the transport museum". Echoes of 'My daughter bough me a Shakletons high chair'.

Only one that seemed to get away with it as a non ingineer from memory was James Burke and his qualifications were in English.

Yes, but the Game Boy and Sonic took over.

Thread: spell checker

Why should we bother with correct spelling and grammar when we are constantly being told by those in the know that English is an evolving language? MOST reasonable web sites have a spline chunker as a STANDARD feature without having to resort to burning vulpines or whatever.

"Most wanted no change?" Bovine excreta JB., Spline Chunk and post numbers go back to when the site was FIRST started.
