Thread: Diamond Whetstones

I don't know about Clifford Northfield but Arceurotrade (advert on left) stock quite a range of diamond wetstones and files. You could also try Axminster Tools.

For your 918 lathe advice it's woth looking here: **LINK**

The 918 and 920 are virtually identical.

Thread: John Parslow skeleton clock
19/05/2012 10:42:18

Time flies - a month since my last post here.

Well, I tried making a burnisher as martin suggested but couldn't get decent results.

I ordered some 2500 wet and dry and some Micromesh from Axminster (thanks for the tip Harold) and get good results following the wt and dry with micromesh. Can't find Autosol here and not sure about metal polishes that may contain silicone so I finished the pivots with Yacht Rubbing, which is used for finishing fibreglass boats, on a lollipop stick. That gave a good mirror finish.

I've added a few photos to my album to show that I am making some progress.

Thread: Deleting Adverts so that posts can be read

I've just had a quick look at another of their forums, **LINK** It's even worse!

I do apprecite all the hard work David does, Ady, but I've found when working in various companies, both UK and foreign owned, that it never pays to keep your head down. If you see something wrong make it known at the highest level. That way you get noticed and are more likely to be promoted.

Hi Ian

Diane is not responsible for the web designer.

We do not know who is in overall charge of the website.

regards david

Well you are in a better position to find out than Ian!

Thread: Surface table alternative?
18/05/2012 10:57:39
Posted by Sid Herbage on 18/05/2012 02:01:04:

I don't mean to be provocative with this but given the relatively low-cost of small, imported granite surface plates, why do people go to so much effort to find substitutes?

Because we're mean?laugh

Hi Ian

When you find out, please let us know.

regards david

This is a stange attitude. Surely if Dianne is the editor she should also be responsible for the web designer and if necessary sack him and employ a better one.

Having said that I have no problems either with Firefox on Linux or IE8 on Windows XP pro.

Thread: Adhesive bond strengths
11/05/2012 13:10:24

It depends on the type of plastic. Some are notoriously difficult to bond to.

You could try one of these

Alternatively how about knurling the end of the shaft, heating it to just under the melting of the plastic, and pushing it intu an undersize hole in the plastic part.

6mm float glass is as flat as you can easily get, cheap and easily available. It does get scratched after a while and will need replacing.

It also bends quite a bit so, if used on a non-flat surface it will not be flat - sort of defeats the object. Get a peice of glass as thick as possible. Glass merchants sell thick glass for tabletops etc., so you may be able to get an offcut cheaply.

Of course it does depend on the accuracy you require.

Thread: Which milling vice
09/05/2012 14:51:44
Posted by John Coates on 04/09/2010 08:59:42:It is second hand and I can't find a model name or number on the machine but the table measures 150 x 630mm

I guess from the table size it is the old round column version. I have had the Warco version of this for nine or ten years.

I have a number of vices from 1.5 in up to 4 in. My favorite is a homemade 3 in one similar to David's those recommended by David. It is easy to align to the axes using a set square against the flat side. You will want it set up like this more often than rotated. If you want to rotate it you can set it up with a precision protractor and hold it down with clamps.

Thread: Increase in standard parcel postage rates
03/05/2012 09:54:55
Posted by wotsit on 03/05/2012 08:49:14:

It is hard to believe that simple padded envelopes can cost 10 pounds or more, yet that is what I have been asked on occasion, so now I rarely order from the UK at all.

Of course P & P includes the labour of packing as well as the materials but I agree that the charges are often too high. For reasonable sized consignments I ask them to use my prefered carrier.

I still order most of my tooling and materials from the UK.  Here, in France, prices are 50% to 100% higher.

I've used these people: http://www.parcelsplease.co.uk/

£7-49 + VAT for 30 kg in mainland UK.

I've used them for deliveries to thz South of France at only £14-50 + VAT for 30 kg.

What did you use for the negative or is it positive? How did you expose it? With a UV lightbox?

Thread: citric Acid mix.
29/04/2012 10:48:50

You could use the spent solution to spray your roses against black spot!

Bordeaux mixture is still used in vast quantities here to spray vines and peaches so I have no qualms about disposing of used solution in the irrigation canal at the end of my garden.

Thread: Lock Problems
29/04/2012 10:41:18

My preference for locks is vaseline on the basis that the key ends up in my pocket & hands and I don't want mineral oils on my hanky.

But Vaseline is a mineral grease - petroleum jelly?

Thread: Taps - What material?
27/04/2012 09:53:31

IMHO what is more important than HSS vs. carbon steel is to use a good lubricant such as Rocol RTD compound. I've used this with taps down to 12 BA without breaking any. Also, particularly for small taps use a stand or jig to keep the tap at right angles to the surface.
