Here is a drawing showing the basic dimensions. Any more questions just ask.
If you right click on the image and select open in a new tab they are a lot clearer.

Ian, I would suggest that you actually try both modes and Mode A may give better performance. And you may be better off using a higher microstep ratio anyway, depending on how fast you want to run.
ok John Mode A it is.

Thanks to all for your replies. All very interesting and useful information. I think I will use mode B, it's to drive a 4" rotary table and the extra torque will be good. Happy New Year. Ian |

Looking at various stepper motor drivers, the dip switch settings on some for micro stepping have 1 (200 steps), 2A (400 steps) , 2B (400 steps) etc Can some one tell me what the difference is between 2A and 2B micro steps. Ian

Thread: Rod's Hoglet |

Hi Graham. Yes I used the Cox method. But like you I thought Andrews method was back to front. What I did was to prepare the cam blank and drill it 1/4" then loctite it onto 1/4" bar long enough to hold it in the collet chuck (so in effect you are holding it by the short end) Then I machined it as in Andrews video and when done re positioned the 1/4" bar so the long end was on top. ( I may have turned the machined cam around as well) But it ended up looking like the end view drawing. Must be honest it turned my brain to mush, it took two attempts to hopefully get it correct. Just thinking about it again and looking at my trial run one I made out of Ali, you could just make the short end longer to hold in the collet machine the cams as Andrews video and then cut the collet end to length (becomes the short end. ) I think I did it my way because to keep the total length as short as possible. Also looking at my trial one there was no need to turn the cam around. Hope this helps. Ian Edited By ian j on 29/09/2022 14:05:15 |

Rod. I started building my engine after seeing your first post. My cam looks very much like yours, so hopefully we are both correct! My progress upto now; Have you and Graham given any thought to ignition and carb. Ian |

Yes, I'm afraid the legs are too long high - they are angled at 8 degrees. They are about 4 3/16" high so should be made 7 1/4" long, I have no idea why the plan give the wrong dimension as it was auto dimensioned and is drawn the right size. Sorry about this - the best solution is probably extending the connecting rod by, say 3/8". I'm surprised this hasn't been noticed before although only a few appear to have been built. I'll change the plans. Neil Neil. I think you forgot to amend the leg length on the drawing as I have fallen foul to this error. You suggest making the con rod longer, would just making the piston rod longer be the answer? Ian |

Steve. If you search for Starrett levels I'm sure you will find a suitable replacement, I did. It was not stocked in the UK but my local Starrett agent (Lawton Eng. supplies ) ordered me one from the US. I think starrett have a minimum order of £50 so Lawton's waited until they were placing an order of other parts. If I remember correctly it was around the £14 mark, took about four weeks to arrive..

As Philip . R suggests, I'm guessing the three position ( A, B or C ) lever on the top of the gearbox is between positions ie not engaged The Myford manual says this can be engaged (gently) with the lathe running. Or it could also be that the sliding selector lever on the front of the gearbox is not fully latched down (lathe should be stopped before moving this lever) |

Hi Simon. It's a bit primitive really. The tool bit goes in one hole and is secured by a piece 1/4" diam bar with a flat tapering to the end on one side. Not sure if I have described it very clearly, if not I can take a photo of mine tomorrow. |
