HiThere
Harold Hall's tool rests have both been published in his books.
One was in his tool and cutter grinding book, and I think the other may have been in his complete milling book.

Thread: MEW Just gets better
12/06/2009 19:46:04
Hey,
Slow down.
I Won't be able to get my head through the door.

Seriously though, I have read Model Engineer since finding it in the school library in the mid 1960's. I learnt engineering from Model engineer and earned a lot of money from the knowledge gained.

Never did I dream that I would get the chance to put something back into the magazine.

A couple of readers have mentioned they thought I am not into model engineering. I am although I only have a a couple of part completed models to show for it. I have spent most of my life working on machines, both manual and CNC.

I have spent the best part of my life earning a living by machining and as a by product to this, I have purchased plenty of tools and machinesand now have two workshops that are well equipped. Now is the time to start making the models that I have also purchased over the years. I probably have about 8 steam engine casting kits, mostly Stuart but not all, a Redwing and  a half built diesel electric locomotive in SM32 (16mm scale 32 mm gauge).

Perhaps this is why I do a good job with ME and MEW?
I enjoy what I am doing.

regards David

Thread: LittleLEC entries invited for weekend June 20 and 21 - 2009
09/06/2009 10:09:15

Do You Have a Small loco? Why not enter LittleLEC?

Do you have a small loco that may have been the one you 'cut your teeth on', and have not driven for a long time. Maybe you have to restrict yourself to building small locos for any number of reasons – space, room, portability, cost, etc. Whatever the reason, why not try LittleLEC?

LittleLEC is for a fun competition for locomotives up to 50 pounds dry weight. It is run along the lines of the long-established IMLEC, in which drivers and their locomotives compete against one another to achieve the best possible thermal efficiency. The efficiency figure is arrived at by calculation, so no dynamometer is involved with its attendant restrictions. eg. the hand pump can be used.

The competition was first run at Guildford Model Engineering Society's track in 2008, and proved to be enjoyable and exciting. It is amazing what can be achieved with a Tich weighing 21 pounds. Four of them ran among the total of 14 entries, and each could run for 20 minutes, without stopping, pulling their driver up gradients of up to 1 in 100. A Rob Roy was successful pulling a load of three adults!

This year the competition is being staged by Worthing & District Model Engineering Society on their track at Field Place, Worthing. Their track is similar in length to Guildford's, and has similar gradients, so will probably produce similar results, though there will be some different models running.

There are still a few spaces in the running schedule on 20th and 21st June, so why not get on to www.wdsme.org.uk and download an entry form? There is still time!

Thread: British Gunmakers screw threads
01/06/2009 16:21:10
Hi There
I used to work for a company called Wilcox And Gibbs.
They made industrial sewing machines.
They were an American company and they had their own system of threads.
They were letter threads and the one we used most often was the letter N one.
It must have been about 6BA size.

Hi There
Rudy Kohupt suggest using a coil from an old magneto.
You can trim the iron laminations to tidy them up or leave as is.
