Thread: Boxford 8"shaper |
17/01/2023 22:31:25 |
Looking at the mechanics of the flywheel and the linkage to the ram there is no way different speeds could be achieved.. The thrust of the cutting stroke does slow down if the cut is to heavy. not by design more to do with workload. |
17/01/2023 20:02:34 |
Well I was not aware the the ram moves at different speeds. I have a Boxford shaper, 3 phase running off an inverter. Never notices the different speeds. Will have a look tomorrow. |
Thread: BSO Dividing head |
13/01/2023 16:57:28 |
Hi all, I eventually got round to buying a dividing head. Today I stripped it down and gave it a clean up and renewed the grease. Got it mounted on the Tom Senior mill to give it an experimental turn over. All OK other than the very nasty spring plate that keeps the "fingers" under tension. After several rotations of the handle the cheap and nasty spring plate ends up on the floor. Does anybody know of a modification to resolve this issue ? |

My go to choice of metal supplies are M-Machine in Darlington. They do EN1APB. other suppliers are also available. |
Thread: A poor early Christmas present. |

I got a full refund less the cost to ship the items back. I will try some RDG one's when I get round to it. |
Thread: Propane regulator needle won't zero |
06/01/2023 10:29:15 |
If the Bourdon tube is still intact you will need to pull the needle off the spindle and replace it to zero. I still have a Budenburg pointer lifter lying about the workshop from my Tiffying days. |
Thread: Coughs and colds |

Roy you are really twisting my arm. If the cough gets any worse. That bottle of whiskey in kitchen might need investigating. |

There is one major problem to all these cures. We are on dry January !!!!! |
04/01/2023 09:22:52 |
I have been working in the workshop over the last week or so. Over last few days I have got a chesty cough, SHMBO said she would get some Lemsip when she went out. She tried 3 shops all sold out ! Looked on the Bay loads of over price items there. Typical of rip off Britain. Suppose it's more hot toddies on a night. |
Thread: General purpose steel |
26/12/2022 14:06:19 |
At the moment I will stick with EN1a as the finish rather than strength in the most important feature. of the items, I may purchase some EN3 just for a comparison between the two. |
25/12/2022 20:57:07 |
I make small quantities of one off set screws, pins etc for a specialist shop. As these items are usually made from 10mm diameter steel I usually use En1a. In the future I may want to case harden some of the items. Would EN3 be better. Does EN3 machine to give a good finish. |
Thread: Another EVRI calamity. |
23/12/2022 08:18:33 |
About 3 weeks ago I manufactured some items for a shop down South. These items were posted first class sign for. After a week they had not arrived, I looked into the compensation claim procedure. The parts were worth approx £300 due to the time to make them. The material cost was about £30. The post office wanted proof of costs of items and proof of postage so I could claim £30. How can you find proof of cost and they needed photographic evidence. Total waste of time. The items arrived after 10 days. Never had problems with EVRI. |
Thread: Case Hardening |

After case hardening a piece of round bar does the actual diameter increase ? |
Thread: Finding Centre Height |
19/12/2022 20:53:11 |
I cannot believe people go the far ends of the earth to find the centre height. I use the pip method every time. No DTI no measuring just a quick rough check against a fixed centre then a final adjustment against a faces off pip check. One of the most simple tasks using a lathe. |
Thread: A poor early Christmas present. |
19/12/2022 18:16:06 |
I just saw one of the larger suppliers of machine tools sell "Genuine" Myford tool holders for £26.25 +vat. What is "genuine" as Myford went to the wall many years ago. Once I get my money refunded I will give them a try. Comparing my genuine stamped with a "W" tool holders with the rubbish I recently purchased, there is no way that 10mm tools would fit due the thickness of material below the tool. |
19/12/2022 08:10:32 |
I thought I would treat myself to an early Christmas present. So I purchased a 10mm square lathe tool set, and four new Myford tool holders off one of the many sellers on the bay. Fist fault. The tools could not be set at centre height so I milled a millimeter of all the tool. Second fault the tool holders would not fit the genuine Myford tool post. A case of you get what you pay for. The tool holders are boxed up ready for return to the supplier. |

Thread: Cad software for dummies. |

Mike I'm certainly an oldie just shy of 70. I think a drawing package would suffice. |

High can anybody recommend some Cad software for a total beginner. Looking to draw bushes, sleeves and other simple engineering projects. It need to run on windows 10 |
