Thread: Largest Engine Made By a Model Engineer? |

So back onto large models, I wonder if the Newcomen engine built by a group of us in Auckland NZ would qualify? It is semi-scale rather than true scale, there being no actual working drawings of any of the originals to allow any claims of rivet counting accuracy. It is not as large as full size while still being large enough to need a truck to move it. In addition, many of the guys who built it are model engineers. don't know if its the biggest but it must be a contender as it is an engine

Many thanks - I have all I wished for and more, there; I'm grateful for the extra thoughts & specific suggestions.. I'm making a backstop to go through the mandrel and have a piece of nominal 10x1mm studding which is perfectly even and nicely formed, but down on major dia. (- it's at 9.37) - bit too small for comfort, especially as I suspect the pitch dia. is under ( - the crests don't look truncated) and as a feedscrew, I want it to have a positive 'feel' and not be a rattle fit. If it had been a simple fixing, or the studding had been half a mil. fatter, I'd have tapped it.
Edited By DiogenesII on 25/09/2022 11:59:46 Edited By DiogenesII on 25/09/2022 12:00:29 at the risk of upsetting anyone. is it 10mm, looks more like 3/8" to me

i used to weld these old bangers. a lot of customers would say if the MOT man did not fail it don't weld it usually happened when i was asked to patch a outer cill and told them the inner was rotten. MOT tester can not fail what he/she can't see. |

i am going to side with the garage with this one . they reported the an interment ABS fault most likely a fatigued wire on one of the sensors its only a mater of time before this fails completely and most likely the cause of the speedo failing. secondly at 12 years old this car would be considered as an old banger [newer than any of mine] that lacking in maintenance. ie it failed on 2 tyres and you say you know nothing about car maintenance. forget it and move on it ain't worth the stress. |

Dial gauges are the easiest thing in the world to check for reading accuracy. Pass a slip under the stylus or anvil, record the reading, pass another slightly different thickness slip under it. If the dial records the difference accurately the instrument is reading correct.
but firstly you need to check the slips so you KNOW they are correct

Running a wiper motor in reverse is courting disaster, only designed to run in one direction. Regards Ian. i know they should only run one way but the one i fitted to my mill table does not seem to mind which way it turns. bough new from a Internet auction site made by a German company very common design and cheap |

I am here to say that if I can make aluminum and gray iron castings without defects, and without hard spots, then everyone in the hobby should expect that the casting kit companies should also be able to do so when using "professional" foundries.
.
the cost of [ almost ] defect free castings would most likely be more than the market would stand. i have spent most of my working life doing N.D.T on the very best casting available no such thing as defect free look close enough there is always something. I however will not comment on hobby castings as i have never used them |
