Thread: Keyless car theft has never been so easy

..it's scrutiny of profit margins dressed-up as 'providing what the customers want' - it's way cheaper to fit a couple of chips and solenoids than keyed locks and mechanical actuation..

Thread: Bridgeport vfd

If you are planning a 3~ supply in the long run, maybe a phase converter would be another option, it would allow you to use ex-industrial machines 'as is', retaining the old school look, feel, and operation.

At one time a 'spendy' option, the price of new & used units seems to be dropping..

..don't know much about them, sure others do..?

Thread: 1920s Lathe spindle removal

" I'm unable to remove the gear that is for the change wheels it is too close to the back gear to put anything in to prise it and I cant fit a removal tool in I think I have to remove that gear and the rest should come off of the spindle. "

I shouldn't prise or pull anything too hard until you are sure all the fixings are out, there could be more than one - how is/was it (apparently) secured to the shaft.?

Some more photo's would be very useful.

..Are there slotted ring-nuts on either side of each of the bearings?

..bit hard to see in the photo's..

Howard, see link in Dave Halford's post of the 17th..

Thread: er 32 collets
22/05/2023 20:17:16

An ER32 chuck will accept an inch through the collar, there could be scope there for making a holder for square toolbits - bearing in mind that a holder for grinding doesn't need to be either as hard or springy as a collet - if it has the correct length and angles, the collar should hold it; if you make it to fit the chuck and not into a collet , then it doesn't really matter if it has an open slot down one side?

Thread: Newbie with a denham junior mk 2

Thor types faster than me...

According to Tony Griffith's Lathe and Machine Tool Archive Lathes.co.uk - Denham both ball or roller bearings can be found in the MKIIs..

Adjustment is usually simple in principle, but can differ in correct procedure from lathe to lathe - hopefully someone more intimately familiar with these machines will confirm the detaills.

I see that Tony can supply manuals, you could also try a 'wanted' ad here or search the 'net.

Thread: Mill recommendations
20/05/2023 09:58:55

As Clive mentioned, if you have a particular field of interest or projects in mind that you can share, it would probably draw out some more specific recommendations.

There's range of subtleties between what's good for automotive repairs or traction engines and what's good for building model aero engines or clocks.

Also (if it's not indelicate) do you have a (vague) budget in mind?

Thread: Fixing Vevor milling table

Do you have a flat surface? - it'd be useful if you can use an indicator to map the surfaces of your table, that way you can check whether / which parts are 'good' and which parts need attention.

It will also help you to define, quantify, and visualise where the deficiencies lie and form a strategy before you start.

Thread: Workshop shelving

..not saying it'll last forever, but.. ..the chuck is a 10" P-B on an 'L' fitting, the clamp sets are '14mm slot'-size..

PS this isn't the bottom shelf..

I 'bulk-bought' an apparently identical set of the shelving linked to from Screwfix.

The shelves are thin, but supported across the middle so the MDF actually supports two 450mm squares.

The units are almost purposely designed to induce buyer remorse, thin, 'wangy', and lacking any kind of stiffness until fully assembled and with the shelves in. If you can screw em to a wall so much the better..

They look & feel pretty dreadful, but on the other hand you get a lot of shelving for relatively little money - 175kg per shelf is pretty adequate (even if somewhat hard to believe)..
