Thread: Barograph 'stiction' |

Good to know that you have solved the stiction, the mod is superior to the original makers design. |

Am I right in assuming your RT was not intended to sit that way round, or are you also concerned with adding extra security? |

Thread: Unlocking a Lock Washer |
18/11/2022 17:14:28 |
Stainless steel starlock washers are available on ebay, by searching for "stainless starlock washers", the size will be the shaft diameter. |
18/11/2022 14:01:22 |
We have a box of Starlock washers at the museum, a range of sizes, but they are spring steel zinc plated, you need stainless steel. You would need four custom made spikes to try to get the ears to move outwards as they are pressing into the end of the shaft. A difficult task, a lot of luck required as well as skill. |
Thread: Boxford Model C tailstock thread |
18/11/2022 13:52:00 |
The LH 1/2" BSW will be easiest to remake, try Tracey Tools for a tap. singlepionting the new leadscrew would be straightforward, and being LH you can thread away from the chuck. 6 AND 12 TPI threads are not really compatible with scale divisions, but 5, 8 and 10tpi are, fortunately a tailstock does not usually need that degree of calibration, the scale in fractions of an inch or millimeters on the quill is good enough for most work. |
Thread: Compressor start up current ? |
17/11/2022 18:18:58 |
The unloader valve should operate as soon as the set pressure is reached and the motor shuts off. It should vent the cylinders to lower the starting torque, therefore reducing the ammount of power needed to get the compressor up to speed when it switches back on. It is not advisable to switch off the compressor before it reaches the set air pressure in the reciever, as the unloader valve will not operate. Switching off and then back on as soon as the motor stops is very bad for it. |

The third photo is to better emphasize the narrow base and the offset fixture holes. The view from the opposite side from the winding handle is better, the RT is just balanced on the mill bed. There are no welds. The angle bracket was spare and good enough for the job, the 8mm screws are tightened into tapped holes with about 2 diameters of thread, there is no slop at all. |

Thread: Another EVRI calamity. |
11/11/2022 13:35:05 |
I got a message from the seller offering to send a replacement and in my reply told them that I would be happy to help with any claim they made to EVRI. The local delivery man is not likely to be to blame, some packages are very small. |
Thread: Rivet Squeezer |
10/11/2022 19:52:58 |
That Minnie spoke rivetter in the picture is very similar to the one we have at the museum, ours was bought from somewhere, but quite easy to make. Ours has a choice of throat depths and about 12 anvils, including a couple that I made. I also modified an old block of steel to hold the tool in a vise. |

At the same time, when I was out I recieved a text saying that a very much more expensive computer component was going to be delivered by DHL. That got me worried after realising something was amiss when my neighbor appeared with it, I had missed the second text saying where it had been delivered. I have always had no problems taking my rubbish home, or using a bin if there is one. I will give the seller a chance to sort things out before taking the matter to ebay. I have used ebay for 15 years with at least 99.9% satisfaction. Edited By old mart on 10/11/2022 19:44:25 |
Thread: soldering irons |
10/11/2022 19:29:51 |
I have several tools from Lidl which use their 20V lithium batteries, and one of the recent purchaces was a soldering iron, and I love not having to use mains power so I bought a second one to keep at the museum. |
Thread: Another EVRI calamity. |

I popped back home at lunchtime from the museum and found an empty packet inside the front door. Later when checking my ebay for some items in the post that had tracking, I saw that one had been marked as delivered and remembered the empty plastic bag. Also checking my emails, ebay had announced that EVRI had made a delivery about ten minutes before I got back to the house. The empty bag was the delivery. What I had ordered was 6 thermostatic radiator heads, the ones in the house may date back to the 70's and certainly didn't work other than on or off. The ebay listing helpfully showed all the dimensions, 70mm tall and 50mm diameter, each head, and the letterbox aperture is 42mm high. I am now in touch with the seller and have sent them photos of the bag and its labels.

Thread: Indexable threading tool tips |
09/11/2022 20:49:35 |
I never rotate the compound to do threading, even 5tpi ACME but the Smart& Brown model A is probably more heavily built than most hobby lathes. As for the photographs by Jason showing the correct angle, that is fine as long as newcomers are aware that the tool tip axis must be parallel to the cross slide axis and not angled with the compound. |
Thread: Rust on New Lathe |
08/11/2022 21:17:37 |
If the lathe wasn't new, I would recommend simply rubbing the rust off with oily wire wool. Any stains left will be simply cosmetic, avoid abrasives like scotchbrite and wet and dry paper. Be polite to whoever you get in touch with and they will be much more likely to put things right without bother. Edited By old mart on 08/11/2022 21:20:21 |
Thread: Modestly priced ER collets |
08/11/2022 21:13:31 |
It would be very useful to report on your findings when the collets arrive, they may be very good. I have bought sets of the cheap Chinese in er8,11 and 25 and not been happy with some of the sizes. I buy them in small quantities just to fit the cutter sizes that are used and have had good ones from APT and Cutwel. |
08/11/2022 17:36:24 |
I looked at the listing and the huge quantity of photos and only saw Premium mentioned. APT list the max runout for their products. |
Thread: "Mr Olds Remarkable Elevator" |
08/11/2022 17:28:19 |
I didn't understand why the weight of the product didn't cause a problem. But the screw supports the weight at every level, so there is no limit to the height except mechanical limits. Its not like a column of water where the pressure is greatest ot the base. |
