I've used the pulley calculator many times, didn't know that the site had so many other options.

Chronos do a range of quite decent MT1 tailstock bits and bobs.

I think the fact that some one calling from Nigeria can cloak the call with a UK dialing code is the telecoms industries greatest failing. For years they have said that they can't do anything about it. The fact is that they can but they won't.

My aunt worked in the engraving shop at Handley Pages. My first watch ,a birthday present at the age of 10 was engraved on the back with my name and address. Factories in those days had many skilled people doing the small unglamorous jobs like engraving. That the pantographs were kept busy is in no doubt , just google a picture of the Victor cockpit. |

Lee Roger’s….I think you are spot on once again….thanks. Should I get the pressure pad half back to smooth ? Just give it a go. Nothing to lose . My approach to these very old lathes is to go gently and only change what is not working. If you want a precision to the last thou your looking at the wrong lathe. Get it just so and you have a decent lathe. Enjoy it !

I think everyone is wide of the mark here . One of those is only a pressure pad and doesn't need a thread at all the other is not too bad and in my experience with 4 Drummond restorations it will probably be OK as it is. Try it , if it works then it's ok.

One family owner from new , I like that sort of history with a machine .

Handbooks and manuals for the Lang are available from lathes.co.uk . I think Tony Griffiths ( the site owner ) would be keen to have some info and pictures for his online archive .Tony is very approachable and a phone call is often the best way to contact him , his inbox is a busy place. |
Thread: Anyone an expert in kitchen knives |

Only 45 years as a chef so still learning and not certain about your knife. Whatever it was it isn't that now .It's size and general appearance would say it's what's known as a French cooks knife.A general purpose tool that does the bulk of the daily tasks chopping and slicing. A fairly soft high carbon steel blade is the reason that it takes a good edge easily and why it has worn down over the years. I have a couple of knives in my kit that have been made into different knives by regrinding once they get past it but yours really should be used sparingly and cherished. Bon Apetit |

The Drummond is a 3 1/2 inch model usually known as the Pre B Type . Nice lathe but not as capable as the later B or M Types , The M is the one that can give an ML7 a run for its money .The square section fitting behind the headstock is possibly part of the countershaft not a brace. Hard to tell ,well lit good photos are key to getting a good price. The crosslide was an optional extra so may or may not be a Drummond part but it's not important , it looks good. The bare lathe is £150 ish , if it is a Dickson tool post with holders +£100 easily. The overall value is impossible to say because a few bits and pieces of tooling can make a big difference. The lathe looks to be ready for restoration and they sell well in this condition. As well as the group mentioned above there is a very active Facebook group with a decent bunch of members. Drummond/Myford Lathe Owners and enthusiasts. |

I have a Bosch pro table saw that won't run. It has all the soft start and overload electronics and a no volt switch that one expects to find on a modern motor. The question is , if I bypass the switch and all the electronics and power it up directly should it run ? Will I damage it ? |
Thread: Portass Dreadnought? |
10/06/2022 10:09:00 |
At £300 I'd go for it . Older lathes like this one and the Drummond mentioned by Dave are a lot of fun and can produce good work. The only caveat is that it can be a labour of love getting it set up and running sweetly. Changing wheels takes an age on my Drummond compared to a more modern lathe , but then half the time is half the fun to me.

Thread: Quick-change toolpost for a Zyto lathe - what size? |
06/06/2022 14:12:00 |
I have the small Myford compatible Dickson from Chronos on my Drummond B Type .which is a bit heavier than the Zyto but comparible, Its fine for most everyday lightish jobs but I still keep a simple shimmed holder for''heavy'' work without the topslide , the key being the extra rigidity. Heavy is of course a relative term but I'm sure you get the gist .

The industrial suppliers of inserts will often have a spec sheet giving a figure for minimum DOC. Sometimes that number is a pretty damn scary one for small lathe owners, you just haven't the power to get close to minimum let alone best DOC.

Based on above advice i am currently looking into buying a myford ml7 off ebay, has some tooling, spare chucks and an operation manual. Also there is a chester 3 in 1 machine in the classifieds on here. Think i might go for that if the myford falls through and its still for sale. Thanks for the replys. I will let you know how i get on... Your post is most welcome ,( even if someone did get out of the wrong side of the bed today) I have yet to hear of anyone that was happy with the lathe / mill combo. The Myford is a good starting point and there's lots of kit available to go with it . Google ML7 buying advice, there are a few simple measurements that will tell you if it's ok or worn out . And don't be fooled by some of the ridiculous asking prices. It sounds like you have a fair bit of engineering nouce so you'll do fine with it . I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on.
